Over here in the UK web browsing on 3G networks is limited to selected websites. Is this also true in NZ or can you browse where-ever you like?

Yes if you are on Vodafone there are no restrictions. You can use a web browser such as Opera on your phone to browse any sites you like or use your phone hooked up to a laptop to use the internet and again there are no restrictions.

I can't understand why 3 are so anal when it come to blocking people..:-(

Cool. Is the vodaphone network better than the telecom one? I was planning on signing up to Telecom Mobile Broadband rather than Vodaphone when I get there.

I do not think either network is really "better" than another one.

At the moment Voda has better 3g coverage but their WCDMA network is limited to a max download speed of 384k

Telecoms EV-DO coverage is "ok" at the moment, and will be in all the main centres and towns by the end of the year. The network has a max speed of 2.4Mbps.

Real word speed on my voda card i got about 200K, and 600K on my Telecom Card.

It is the sort of question that will get all sorts of reply’s, from people who are passionate about the technology and the brand they support. I say take the time when you get here, see which provider (if any) will have 3G coverage where you need it and take it from there.

Thanks very much for the info. We were thinking of getting a Camper Van and travelling around a bit when we get to NZ so I think that coverage is probably more important than speed. I'd like to be able to browse the net from the Van all over the country.

if this is the case I would go with Telecom.

On Vodafone the fallback is to GPRS while on Telecom it is CDMA 1xRTT, which is faster. Both have coverage on roads and towns, with 3G only being available on the mains centres pretty much regardless of network.

They also might like to know Telecom NZ do not use SIM cards and they will have to get a new Handset that will only ever work in NZ and web browsing on GPRS is fine the only issue is when moving larger files.

Also on Vodafone 3G you can Video call back to the UK and many other parts in Europe and other countries

Telecom NZ do not provide video calling and also very limited International SMS. vodafone international SMS is 20 cents NZ no matter where it goes.

Good point - it's not clear in the thread, but Vodafone NZ uses GSM/GPRS/UMTS while Telecom NZ uses CDMA 1xRTT/EVDO - the systems are not compatble.

Telecom NZ and Vodafone NZ have equal coverage so coverage is not a issue around NZ but i'm not saying they cover %100 of New Zealand as well because they don't.

Travelling round the country in a camper, they will likely spend precious little time in Voda 3G areas capable of supporting video calling...

Telecoms 3G will have the widest coverage by far by Xmas this year, and speeds are good too. You can buy new hardware without a contract term when you arrive, and sell it on to recoup some costs before you leave (only ever pass on hardware after its been disconnected though!!).

Data cost is a factor too, between 6 and 220 megabytes monthly, it is absolutely cheaper to go with Telecom.

Disenchanted do you know about Vodafone NZ roll out of 3G UMTS and where will be covered, If you don't I would not comment about coverage!! If so can you fill me in on there plans please and how can you tell how much data they are going to use. Can I have next weeks lotto numbers as well.

Dude - chill. Of course I dont. Lets just look at what is public knowledge for coverage plans for the rest of this year (which is an ever smaller period of time). If Voda come and blow T3G coverage out of the water at the end of the year, then great, but be careful you dont break an NDA, you might lose your job.

Of course I cant tell how much data they are going to use, but I have a lot of data customers, and the percentage of them that use outside that range is limited. It would not -suprise- me if Vodafones data users have -similar- habits to Telecoms data users.

Absolutely if you are going to use 1GB of mobile data, Voda is a better deal, or even 300MB or 250MB, but thats probably not a large pecentage of people. The inference of my statement was that in that range, Telecom is cheaper - so outside that range, Voda is probably going to be. Would you have jumped down my throat about it if i said "use over 220MB and you will get a much better deal from Voda" ?

Thanks for all the replies. It's really useful. I will probably use lots of bandwidth as I will spend a couple of hours a day online. Looks like Vodaphone might be the one to go for if I can use a UK handset and it's cheaper for lots of usage.
