Is it true that free calling is possible on Telecom 025 cellphones as Telecom is phasing out the network? If thats the case how do I go about it? I want this for the Christmas break for my cousin whos travelling around the country to have as an emergency phone

I'd be highly doubtful, it's not the sort of thing I can see Telecom doing, there are still thousands (/10's of or more?) 025 phones active in NZ, and AFAIK the final kill date for 025 is out in 2007.

If they need an emergency phone best bet would be to just get them hooked up with a prepay phone and a bit of credit. From that angle it might be worth finding out if anyone knows which phones are doing the best regarding coverage at the moment?

I've been told there are now quite a few places that have lost 025 coverage over the past few months with the EV-DO upgrade due to ancient gear being replaced. Can anybody (tony?) confirm this at all and if the information can be made publically available?

due to what telecom has tolled me the 025 network will not be shutdown untill the year 2007 and you will beable to trade your 025 mobile up to a new 027 mobile. i don't think you will get free calling they haven't sed anything about it. and if they would do something like that it would be on tv just like everything else they do lol.

unofficial:
025 coverage will be left to run its course (i.e. no new coverage, and very doubtful about repairs on failed gear.) I am not aware of any 025 gear being proactively pulled out when EVDO upgrades are done. (But it would make sense to do that - and if i was a telco "TonyCom" ??) I would pull it out at that time.

025 network to be pulled around mid-2007.

free calling on 025 - hHAHaHhahAHAHhahAhAHahhAhahAHAHAaaaaahaHAHhahAhAhAhAA NO
They are trying to get people off the network, not back on it!!! All new promos and calling specials etc only apply to 027 to encourage migration (some business and most corporates are excepted from this rule and pay same rates regardless of network).

There are more places with 027 coverage, and no 025 than there is the other way around.
(i.e. yes, I concede the point that 025 is still better in some places, but there is much more 027 coverage than 025 in NZ). If I was buying an emergency phone, it would be an 027.

The RF and TDMA (025) gear is End-of-life and was so in 2001, apparently the unofficial word is that no gear is getting replaced, what's happening though is they are pulling extra sites in what was once congested areas and recycling what gear is avail as the more remote critical switches break down (like all old electronics) 025 gear is HUGE 80's tech stuff.

When the NEC-NEAX (Nippon Electronic Automatic eXchange) 61 K,M & S type PSTN exchanges fail in remote areas, they generaly replace them ASAP with digtal remote units (Alcatel? Nokia?) (those nasty things that are totally dependent on the host, kinda like a PC Thin-client) and strip them for parts for the larger 61K exchanges (THAMES)

025 always had coverage issues, TDMA was diabolical and AMPS was better though hissed like a strangled python.

Has a decision been made yet on the location of the new switches for the NG network?

Caro street hamilton street? that's the main "hub" for t'com though international; switching is done at auckland ain airedale if i remember rightly, the other black building is for the IP network (xtra)

though as it's VOIP i'm sure it'll be really spread around, just network termination will probably be done through data pipes to the main centres.

Remember they were charging an extra $5 a month for analogue and $0.20c a minute surcharge for all calls.. I don't know how far that got. I can imagine next year they will start removing all the old call plans and use this as a migration push. i laughed when they were offering free 2280's for trading in an 025.. the battery life is WORSE!

Why are we talking about 025? the only thing I want is the number range preserved which probably be a reality in 2007.
