Is it true that Telecom doesnt allow linked text messages on its network? Eg being able to send 1 real long message spanning multiple texts? A friends Nokia 6225 says it can do it in the manual, but in practise stops at 160 characters. this is soooo annoying as every vodafone phone ive had in the last 5 years has been able to do this

This is a network dependant feature. Telecom does not support it

I regularly send linked texts from my Harrier. Sure it's not handset related.

[edit] oops realised what poster was asking, my bad. When i send text 160+ it splits them and the receiver gets 2 messages. That part must be network dependant. I didnt realise in voda it stitches them together.

I would have thought phone dependant.

Nokia+Telecom seem to have a history of somewhat crippling the handsets.

On VF when you do it, it just sends two seperate messages (but I think it has some special characters so another capable phone can recognise them and string them back together)

Yeah its definately the case, that it splits it up into multiple messages for the actual sending and uses a couple of chars at the beginning to say 1/3, 2/3, 3/3 etc... so that essentially sounds like its network-independant and its just the handsets that need to support the splitting and merging. So why the hell would a semi-modern Nokia like the 6225 not do this. Only answer I can think of is Telecom has crippled it for some unknown reason? Rediculous

There is no option as far as I can see, and believe me, I've looked. I found the manual on Telecoms site, although thats just Nokia's manual, and it doesnt appear to be an option, it just works if the network supports it.

No apparent user setting that can be changed that I can see.

Perhaps it was disabled by accident, or maybe it came up in the Nokia+Telecom spin-the-wheel lottery of what to disable on the handset (along with saving pictures in the web browser, and non-camera phone (a la 6585) ability to even recieve MMS).

Cue Jama for an explanation - stage left....

027 supoorts up to 200 chars, I have successfully sent 190 chars to a phone,
025 just tries to get the whole message and jams up the switch, 021 get's only the first 160 chars.

You can send a multipart message to an 027 and it then just replaces the voda specific date headers with <1/2> <2/2> etc. it's really a problem with the specifications, the GSM has a common sms protocol for carrying multipart SMS and the nokia picture messages and ringtones etc

The 027 nokia use //SCKL which was originally created to allow 025's to be sent ringtones OverTheAir and uses a string of code which is totally visible and not a 8-bit data string like GSM (GSM uses 7-bit for their SMS carrier normally).. try sending a picture messge from a nokia 027 to something like a samsung. you'll get 3 messages all starting with //SCKL00

some 021 phones also support the //SCKL so you can in theory, carry a ringtone/picture message across networks by SMS.

There are also translation tables to replce some of the characters like âàäãëí etc across the SMS gateways and not damage any handset.

Ahhh so its a GSM/CDMA thing. Still, thats pretty cr** of CDMA! So limiting having so few characters

Did you read what was written? CDMA supports up to 200 characters, but GSM cuts off at 160... its -multiple- messages that seem to be the edge...

Telecom in NZ are one of the few mobile providers than can at least split the messages up into induvidual SMS's.

Obviously we are looking at handsets not supporting it whereas GSM is a global stndard and you swap a little chip, CDMA is quite network dependent. There is no "global guideline" except for the over the air interface and signalling, Most phones are based on a Qualcomm chip (MSM series) with different firmwares. Nokia's are their own thing... thus "supporting" many weird stuff like "picture mesages" (not photo messaging) in some propietry format

TCNZ operates one of the most advanced and reliable CDMA 1rxTT + EVDO networks in the world.

I should start on how Lightsurf works (photo messaging).... ***OT alert***

It's there somewhere.. i remember turning it on.. and now i'm sending split message to other people i know who have nokias. I have a 6255 - keep searching them menus.
