After being away from Telecom for six months during which time I used Kiwilink for VOiP and 'net for one reason or another (cannot think of a really good one right about now) I went back.

It seems my phone number which was also my VOiP number has been ported back to Telecom - I think this is part of the problem I am about to unfold but of course, I could be wrong.

When I received the router I went straight into setting it up, I have done this before so not a big deal or so I thought.  I got to the part where I just have to go to telecom.co.nz/broadband or whatever it is and put my details in and apparently those details were incorrect.  Hmmm, so I called Telecom and spoke to a robot in the Philippines who assured me that they understood I had a problem with my broadband.

Two hours later ...

For some reason I could access the 'net using the ethernet cable but the wireless would only work if I didn't use WAP - every password I tried (using the Configure page) came up as invalid.  So, I figured I could live with WEP - no big deal.

Now, the green lights that are all meant to be green never did work like that for me.  The wireless light was always orange and still is.  I have now gone through three modems each with the same issue.

It just seems to 'drop off' up to a dozen times a day.  I had my geek friend here today who suggested my phone might be doing this.

Funnily enough - it didn't drop off the entire time he was here but as soon as he left - kapow! And then my mum called telling me she had been trying to get through to me for ages but the phone was engaged - it wasn't.

I am wondering if it is possible (trying to find a logical reason) that because my phone number is being ported from Kiwilink back to Telecom - if that is somehow responsible for the drop off's?

I have a wonderful MacBook Pro with Leopard if that makes any difference.

Also, have changed the channel from 6 to 9 and now 4 ... hasn't made the slightest bit of difference.

It really is driving me crazy.

Thanks

you don't happen to have a 2.4g wireless phones in the house that you are using ?
As if you have that is the same frequency that wireless uses and it will drop you out all the time ?
If you are using wireless phones you need a 5.8g or 1.8g which won't affect your wireless connection.

Hilariously, I was talking to a girlfriend when your response came in - Oh, I said - some kind soul has found the answer.  After reading it out to her I ran around the house looking for the phone exclaiming with frustration that I couldn't find the phone.  Duh! I was talking to her on it.  *groan*

Anyway, after checking it out on the DSE website: my phone is a 1.8ghz - SIGH.

Thanks though ...

The default wireless channels are 1, 6 and 11. Perhaps try using channel 1, as it appears to be the only one you haven't tried :-) at this time.

If you have changed to WEP, the wireless indicator light will be orange. Green when using WPA and orange when using WEP.

You also mentioned that you failed to manage to create a username when you tried accessing the online form. As you also mentioned that you had previously been with telecom, you may have an old username on their system if you are using the same telecom account. This can cause hiccups when you try to create a new username, but perhaps the robot managed to fix this for you?

Porting the number would have no relevance to the drop-offs, but if your phone is connected to a faulty filter this might cause dsl drops which would have a similar effect as wireless interference.
