Okay,
I've just got my third telecom Thomson Modem in a row. And guess what? It doesn't work. All the lights except internet come on and the Broadband light just keeps flashing! What happening here. Three in a row not working? (we've been with telecom for 15days now)

What could the problem be. Our old, ADSL 2+ modem works fine (DSL-502T D-Link)...

Thanks,
kelburn

Can you log in to the modem and tell us what status messages are appearing?

My guess is some problem with the connection to the modem. Are you using the same cable as with the old modem or the new cable that came with the Thomson modem?

okay, scrap that.
Got it working, but now when I try and connect the second desktop through wireless, it doesn't recognise anything. Nothing on the router's interface and the computer won't connect to the internet. However when I unplug the ethernet cable from the router the message "a netwrk cable has been unplugged" shows up. Despite this, when it's plugged back in, it won't connect to the internet. and the shared drives over the network won't connect either from the desktop I'm writing this on which connects perfectly.

Have you enabled wireless networking in the modem config?
I'm not familiar with the telecom modems but it is probably turned off by default.

well here's the thing.
Both wireless and ethernet are on and working.

There are two computer side by side both ethernet connected and a latpop (and ipod) wirelessly.
The ipod connects fine to the wireless and this desktop is connected fine through ethernet but the other doesn't seem to connect. It doesn't show up in the router's web interface and it can't connect to the shared network drives.
Here's the thing, when I unplug the ethernet cable from the router, the PC that won't seem to connect then comes up with a message saying that it's been disconnected. But plug it back in and nothing once again!

Did you register all the wireless devices?

In my experience with that particular modem, it's best to register them one-by-one. Hit the search button in the web interface, then quickly connect your device before the router finish searching.

Also, the status of connections displayed aren't always up-to-date...

Okay, could you talk me through that then?
(sorry with some things I'm a complete noob and others I know exactly what I'm doing!Tongue out)

So could you tell me step by step what to do for that?

Thanks

Scrap the Thompson, grab a different modem, even the DSL-502T is a better device than these Thompsons >.<

1) Browse to your Thomson Gateway (http://dsldevice.lan)

2) Select "Home Network" from the left navigation bar

3) Select "Devices" (under Home Network)

4) Under "Pick a task...", select "Search for wireless devices"

5) The router will start searching for devices...

6) As the router search for devices, about 1/4 way through the progress bar, it's a good time start to quickly get your devices connect to the router (this is to try to avoid the I'm looking but I can't see you, and vice versa)

Good luck!

Yeh those Thomson ones are garbage. We've had atleast 5 replacements, although could be more because I've lost actual count. The one we have no is starting to have problems and Telecom are adiment its not their end so we're trying to find out if this modem is faulty as well. The d-link we had didnt have any problems, it just wasnt adsl2+ compatible. :/

Yeah, Thompson is a bit of a junk...

It reboots randomly, lose connectivity, and a lousy web management interface...

The Thompson's when they work, they work very well, however I have had a modest number that start dropping connections and rebooting for no apparent reason, compared to other brands that just simply dont have such issues. After I had a run of about ten of these do this I gave up spending time trying to sort issues with them, now if people report issues with them I just replace them with product I know works.

As for the user interface, its definitely a bit odd but usable once you get your head around it, I often refer to it like hopping out of a corolla (normal run of the mill modem) and into a Citroen, all the levers and peddles are there, just in odd places with funny diagrams.

Cheers
Cyril

That's a great analogy.  I had my first experience with one of these modems last night.  When you say "odd places" I found this meant "buried 4 or 5 levels deep".

Took me 5 minutes to work out how to turn DHCP off and another 5 to change the IP address of the modem.

I went through 4 or so of these thomsons.

They kept rebooting/ losing settings.

So, cancelled the contract (on the basis of telecom breaking the contract by not providing a usable modem), and got myself a 2-wire.

Has worked perfectly ever since. Maybe a couple of drop outs since March, likely due to nearby line maintenance work.

2Wire.  Give it time .  The one at my motherinlaws place  everytime it gets turned off it defaults back to factory default. Thank goodness  it uses a generic login name and password..  Must replace it with a decent one some day..

Out of curiosity... What's the latest and greatest in terms of independently sourced modem?
