I am on one of telecoms home plans with the thompson router they give out for free.
This may just be a coincidence but my internet is fairly consistently disconnecting whenever I start up a torrent download. I am using uTorrent 2.2.

Also would just like to make clear that what I am downloading currently is completely legitimate (freeNAS)

Should I get out my tinfoil hat?

No, you should get a decent router however.

Hehehe

All the people downloading Linux distributions must be frustrated by the people downloading 'Linux distributions'.

I have Telecoms latest freebie WIFI router/modem, and no problems with torrents killing it.

Funny how "Linux Distributions" seems to be about the only legitimate use people can think of for torrenting.
The modem/router (I am aware that there is a distinction between the two terms, just not entirely sure of the details, I assume it must be a modem as it is the only box connected to the phone line) is a Thompson TG585 v7 to be exact.

World of Warcraft patches are distributed via torrenting, so are Company of Heroes online and many other games now.

There are plenty of legit legal media torrents available too, Pioneer One for example.

Bit torrent is just a delivery mechanism, what people choose to use it for comes down to humans.

Anyway back to the OP...

What are your settings in utorrent, specifically under preferences > Bandwidth?

Make sure you have a sensible limit on connections (eg: 400) and max number of peers (eg: 100)

Are you forwarding the port from your router to your pc?

It could be the firewall on the router actively blocking incoming connections not initiated on your end thus bringing your connection down.

Check you have the latest firmware and also look at the number of simultaneous connections set in uTorrent. Many low end routers are simply incapable of routing large numbers of connections.

Oh, and turn off uTP, it seems that UDP stuff kills routers faster than TCP, and uTP seems to choke the connection up when happening in anycase.

Max connections should be on 80 (global) and 50 (per torrent) on a single port router.
On a 4 port / wireless router, max connections should be 130 (global) and 90 (per torrent)

This depends on the router. I have a Cisco router here and have it configured as this:

Global Maximum number of connections: 4096
Maximum number of connected peers per torrent: 2048

I used this configured to test my TelstraClear connection... Every router is different.

I have a free Telecom thompson single port router (non wireless) and couldnt find any firmware updates for it! Searched google high and low. Any chance anyone knows where said firmware may or may not be?

That advice is way to random.

The speed and quality of the routers hardware and software/firmware are what determines how many connections can be handled and what happens when limits are met (crash/disconnect or gracefully drop excess connections).

Thats just settings which i have found work well as a general rule.

Of course it varies per modem but it can also vary based on your isp's p2p throttling policy as opening too many connections can trigger throttles.
