I am so disappointed with the internet speed at my house. I have done 5 tests via my cellphone either Telecom internet or Vodafone 3G network. Comparing with the tests, the speed of WiFi network is slower than the 3G network.
The 1st test was held outside Victoria Park Market via VF 3G network yesterday.
2nd test was in same place via Telecom free WiFi this morning.
The fastest one was tested at 2pm in New Market via VF 3G network.

4st test was done just them via VF 3G network in my house.
The Slowest was my WiFi network which was connected to Telecom Xtra!

Telecom....how slow is the internet speed!

What steps have you taken to identify the issue?

Have you tried a cabled connection rather than wireless? Depending on how crowded your the wireless is in your area and the types of devices connected (ie b / g) you will find wireless will always restrict your speeds to less than a cabled connection.

Are you using plug in filters or do you have a master filter? Have you performed an isolation test to eliminate your house wiring as a cause?

Statistically speaking poor wiring within your home is the single biggest cause of slow DSL speeds, and a probable cause of your issue.

I would also add that since you don't state where you live(your mobile tests are done in the cbd but for all we know you might live in Piha) it is hard to give any idea of what sort of speed you might expect even if we knew your wiring was up to scratch.

If you live in an area sufficiently distant from an exchange/cabinet it could very well be that the fixed broadband is indeed slower than mobile broadband.

i'd also like to know against which speedtest servers these ran... same server each time, or different servers? 155ms sounds like a speedtest to a server in the US whereas 46ms seems like a test to a server in AUS.

AS sbiddle said... And even with a ethernet connection you will have problems. For example I have a 100 Mbps connection at home (TelstraClear cable). Testing from my HP laptop with its builtin ethernet I get about 85 - 90 Mbps.

However, my other small laptop doesn't have a builtin ethernet (only WiFi). If I use a USB-ethernet adapter, the same test only shows up to 25 Mbps.

I can't blame the difference in speed on my ISP when looking this way.

There are many variables and you have to explore all of them - not use WiFi for speed tests, make sure you have proper filters, make sure your house wiring is not causing problems, make sure wiring outside the house is not corroded, what distance you are from a cabinet or exchange, etc.

For example, look at this discussion on why this user's broadband was slow. Would you blame the ISP for that?

I forgot to post that I had isolated the other devices when I did the test. Only my iPhone connected my WiFi network. I had tested on my PC wired with my router and isolating other devices also. I got the approximately same speed as well. The reason why I did these tests as the speed was so slow recently.

I am in Central Auckland.

Today, I was socked as the speed like a rocket. ADSL 2 might have been set up near my house.
