Hey all.

I recently purchased a HTC desire phone. It seems it was on the Telstra network.

It therefore has all these Telstra apps and stuff on it that i can't use which really annoy me.

What is the best way for me to go about setting up the phone?

Should I install a completely different android system which is customised or something, or do I just delete as much as the Telstra stuff as possible, ignore it and get on with it?

I am completely new to smart phones and android, I have no idea what i'm really doing!

Any help would be much appreciated.

Australian phone then?
You can't just delete stuff from Android without root access and if you go overboard it will kill it.
Your best bet would be having a look at xda-developers forums and see which rom would suit you.

Yes I believe it is Australian haha..

Do you or anyone else happen to know what rom's are good? =/

CM 7 is the favorite for most phones.
Google (and look at youtube) for "cyanogenmod 7"

I see there is two options, GSM or CDMA. Neither rings a bell with me.. i though GSM was vodafone and CDMA was old telecom network? What one will my new xt one be!?

I know not much of xt, but considering it uses a sim, i'd point to gsm. Wait and see when you get some other replies. I think the cdma is the american verizon network.

CDMA is telecoms old network. WCDMA/UMTS is 3G. XT is 850mhz main (2100mhz infill only) 3G.

For the Desire, Cyanogenmod is probably the best. There's heaps others around.

In order to get rid of the telstra stuf,f you'll have to root it. You might as well root it + install a custom rocovery which will let you install a custom ROM on it.
xda-forums should have plenty on how to root/custom ROM the desire.

You could try this rom but there are many available for the desire - you have a GSM version.

Read all the instructions on how to flash before you start - you don't want to brick your phone.
