Havent been on line lately since I've joined, so I'd like to ask everyone that visits and reads posts from others. So, I'd like to start off by saying this,

If your like most GEEKS here, you probally have a Cell phone, A PDA of some sort, A Laptop and most likely a Desktop PC ! Theres something here that is COMMON amoung all these devices, its the HARDWARE ! Each device that is listed here is limited by its hardware in order to Communicate with others, be it over a phone line or air waves.

For each device, which I might add, prob cost you an Arm and a Leg for and NOW that you got so much money invested in it, something else comes accross the way to put that Sparkle back in your eye, and money in the mfg's pocket.

Would you like to use that New Flagled device you have an EYE for ? Sure, you can afford it , but what about your other TOYS ? Yeah, you can sell it on EBAY at a loss. But what if there was another way to keep all them TOYS from collecting DUST ?

Software is not the answer here my fellow geeks, its the HARDWARE !

Imagine, One tiny device, like a USB thumbdrive or a SIM card that holds all your information and configuration settings for your cell phone and internet service AND to be able to use that device amoung all your toys and have it automatically configure it and ADJUST to the hardware you now have !

To have a device that is UNIVERSAL and that would ADJUST to your useage would be the ULTIMATE GEEK TOY ! This is what I dream of ? I want to be able to CONNECT to others through any device I have now and not be limited to any such thing as HARDWARE.

I wish there was a mfg who can design and bring out a small chip that can be inbeded into any device and use a universal device to CONNECT ! It would be nice to take out my SIM card from my cell phone and plug it in to my desktop and have the same capablity !

Come on my Fellow Geeks, Voice your thoughts and views on this !

STAND UP FOR WHAT WE GEEKS WANT AND NEED !

nice thought, but it doesnt address the issue of why a lot of things are proprietry in the first place: economics.

If I lock you into my software/hardware combination, I will make more revenue than if i sold you my software to use on any hardware you like.

sim from phone to pc has already been done - I saw a laptop about 18 months ago that had a GPRS phone/modem built in - just insert sim and go for it...

trouble is that a lot of this technology is licenced, you cant just freely manufacture it and do what you will.

open source is probably the best hope here, but i think the number of freely usable open source hardware manufacturing plants currently numbers around zero worldwide.

just my cynical two cents worth - though I would love to carry a terabyte thumb drive with everything electronic i own on it, and use my software on any device anytime i want, or use it to have my voip number follow me around from home to work etc.
