Hi

I have just joined Telstraclear and I must say I am wishing I had stayed with Vodafone I have only been on the Telstra clear network for 1 day and I have noticed my Pings have gone from 40-50ms with Vodafone, and now I get 110-120 Ping with Telstra, I live in Hamilton so Ping the Auckland Severs. Surely the ping cannot be that different with a change of company?
I have used the Vodafone and Telstraclear speed test servers and both are reporting about the same pings.

also my down speed is about 3mb/s in morning and I am lucky to get 1mb/s during the evening as you can see from below test from Telstra speed test.

I only joined Telstra because I play a fair bit of Games online and need good pings to Aus and US servers, I was told by many of my mates that Telstra had great internet so I changed and now all I get is kicked from servers for having to higher ping.

Does any one know what can be done to rectify this??

I am using the modem that Telstra sent me, below are line speed reporting from router and bottom is what Telstra server gave me on speedtest.

Your DSL sync rates are only 4288kbps so ~3.5Mbps is the most you're ever going to get from your connection.

80% of NZ premises should obtain a DSL sync rate of at least 10Mbps. The fact you aren't willt ypically only be for two reasons - 1) Poor wiring, which statistically will be in your home and not the Chorus network or 2) Your distance from an exchange or cabinet

Since you're new here you potentially haven't read the hundreds of other threads where people detail their issues.

The first thing you need to do is look at the Chorus SAT website (www.chorus.co.nz/sat) and tell us whether you're being served by a cabinet or exchange and whether you're in a 10Mbps zone or not.

You'll also need to sdescribe your internal house phone wiring, whether you have a master filter (assumption right now is that you clearly don't), how many devices you have, whether they have filters, whether you have an alarm, and whether you're performed an isolation test.

Statstically speaking most DSL sync speed issues are related to poor internal wiring within the home and if you don't have a master filter installed you will always receive a level of DSL performance that is less than somebody who has a master filter installed.

why would ping go from 40 yesterday to 120 today and only thing changed is service provider, 3 year old house with master filter all done.

I don't have a Alarm in the house, im not in a 10mbps zone so speed is not really the issue for me my Ping is as I do a lot of online gaming and keep getting kicked from servers I used to Play on all the time

when I First moved into my new house 3 years ago I was with telstra and got a 20ms Ping I dont understand what has happened how can it go from

20-30ms 3 years ago with Telstra
40-50ms with Vodafone for 1 year
120 ping with telstra current

and all the same address, I have 1 phone in the house that is plugged in with a filter wall and my modem.

You haven't said what you are pinging.

As for small variations interleaving will add/remove 16ms to a ADSL2+ connection.

I'm pinging the Telstra speed test server and the Vodafone speed test server and also I know what i used to ping in Aussie game server

Ring Telstraclear and ask to have interleaving turned off on your connection.

it's most likely telstraclear's current adsl issues. even with interleaving on you should definitely be under 60 msec to auckland and 90 msec to sydney.

oh and you're likely to find it's worse in evening. if it's still high during morning it could be modem/wiring problems (less likely if you were fine on vodafone) or interleaving could be on, and should be switched off..

ditch the telstra modem, take the vodafone one and put the telstra user info in it and see if your pings improve.

Rollie, download a copy of WinMTR and do a bit of testing with that.

I'm finding latency to my first hop ranges between 8 and 500ms. It used to be ~10 iirc and didn't vary much.

That you're seeing 3mbit in the morning and 1mbit in the evening points to congestion.

Gary did comment last week that they're putting more capacity on line over the next couple of weeks.

It seems clear that the $75 deal they've been marketing has been a bit more successful than the network planning.

What I'm really wondering is will users churn back to other providers or put up with it and will legacy customers now look for other deals and better performance from someone else, or will Telstra be able to react fast enough to keep customer churn down?
