Hi All,

I recently helped try and configure a new T-box at my uncles house for the Olympic games, and to celebrate the hi-def he also bought a new 55" Sony Bravia LCD full hi-def 1920x1080, using HDMI. The t-box is using the Lower Hutt cable.

The TV only reports 1280x1024 when I hit the info button on the remote control. I tried changing the option on the T-box from 4:3 and 16:9 and any other option I could find. I got the most out of 16:9 (1280x1024) can't remember what res 4:3 reported, but it was even less.
This gives a small square like image in the middle of the screen, almost the right height, and large black bars left and right. 

So I rang up the friendly Telstra clear technician who wanted to know if my TV said 1080i or 1080p, when I said, the TV said 1280x1024, he got annoyed with me and quoted that transmission protocols are different for TV's than just resolution, as opposed to a computer monitor. I told him I had a little experience with these things and 1080 lines at 16:9 ratio = about 1920 width, hence the resolution specified in the back of the manual for the actual pixels on the TV is 1920x1080. But he didn't want to know this and ended up not helping me at all.

So I hauled out the 3 year old Sony Bravia 40" full hi-def and sure enough it said the same thing: 1280x1024

My only solution was to put the Sony TV on 2x zoom and lose out on some vertical picture and endure some slight squeezing, but I can tell its not pixel perfect.

Where as two houses down from us the same t-box (same installation in time for the games) with a Panasonic TV says 1080p (1920x1080), and looks much better, no vert squeeze, no image loss, no horz stretching, i.e. no 2x zoom required.

I think the model for the Sony 55" was Bravia KDL55EX500, the 40" was a LCD Bravia as well but 3 years older, unknown model. The same problem spanning 3 years suggests the t-box is not happy negotiating the right resolution with a Sony Bravia.

Any idea's to fix this problem besides getting a different brand of TV?

Check the TV is running up to date firmware.
