Hi, I will be in San Francisco this week and was looking at purchasing a Treo 680 or 750.
First any thoughts on differences between the two.

Secondly, I have read the Vodafone warning about parrallel imports etc. What exactly would one lose? I do not use vodafone alive, download ringtones, mp3s etc. All I am after is a good business phone/PDA that can also do email.
Would all these features work on imported phones?

That's ok, because the Treo is not a Vodafone live! handset, so there's nothing to lose there. I'd go for the Treo 750 because it will be HSDPA compatible in the near future.

In the U.S. you will only find the Treo 750 locked to Cingular. You can only find the 750v in New Zealand, Australia and the UK.

As for the Treo 680, it will only work on GPRS here in New Zealand...

Thanks for the comments, I went to the Palm and Cingular stores today and you are correct that the 750 is locked to Cingular. The 680 does come unlocked.

I believe that the two major differences are 3G vs no 3G and Windows mobile vs Palm s/w.
I am missing anything?

As stated in my first post, I am not a mobile device afficianado. I am simply looking for a good convergence of technology that allows phone, email, and organizer (palm). More complex tasks and web browsing are best done on a laptop.

I see websites that will unlock GSM cell phones, how safe is that?

Also Cingular told me that they would unclock the phone after 3 months. I guess one could take the cheapest contract with them and unlock at that time.

Your thoughts?

Yes, it comes down to that 3G vs 2.5G and Palm vs Windows Mobile.

Mind you, when purchasing something on a contract what the store tells you is not always the whole truth. There are lots of fineprints and most of the times you have to pay a fee to unlock the phone - and you still have the contract. Actually if you get a contract, because it's hard for non-U.S. citizens to manage to get a contract, without credit history, etc...

If your not looking to use it for Webbrowsing or as a bluetooth modem, then in my opinion you're best to save yourself some money and just go for the Treo 680. Make sure you purchase an unlocked Treo 680 though.
