Does anyone have problems with the message waiting light turning off by itself?
The light comes on OK with a new message but goes off again after about 40 minutes.
I have proved it is not the phone. If I log into voice mail then log out without listening to the messages the light will come on again for another 40 minutes.The “Message waiting” section of the line status on the PAP2T changes from “Yes” to “No” when the light goes out.
I logged a call 2 weeks ago but there has been no progress so far other that having the message light option on the Myvfx page turned off.

When you pick up the Phone do you still here stutter dial tone or does this disappear as well ?,
I have just checked our Ticket system and do not see a Ticket for this ,

if you can send me date and time of this occurance along with your number I will check the messages and see if I can help,

what happens for Voicemail notification, a message is sent which tells the unit that there is a meassage waiting, this cause the unit to activate the MWI and produce stutter dial tone, this should onlty be removed on receipt of another message or if the unit is repowered which would only remove the stutter dial tone.

Just tried a test call - the stutter tone stopped when the light went out after about 15 minutes. I will send the call info to you.

You have a reply, nothing appears wrong with any signalling as you will hopefully see in the PM, only one notify is sent to the device over that time frame and that is a Message Waiting , no cancel so possibly the box may be restarting or have an issue , if you can give me the info about the uptime, then I can go from there,

I am unaware of the PAP2T restarting. I was refreshing the line status screen on the ATA every few seconds and noticed that the "Message waiting" state changed from yes to no when the ATA did one of its periodic registrations.
The signals to control the light involve a burst of ringing then some FSK signalling so it unlikely to be random noise.
Maybe the ATA does a MWI cancel on restart. I will power cycle the box tonight to see what happens. I hope it is not a hardware problem, tiring to explain to DSE why I want an exchange could be a mission.

Have done some testing.

Power cycling the PAP2T and WAG54G, unplugging and plugging the network cable don’t cause the light to reset.

The problem is same on another ADSL circuit with a USR router.

A long call (1 hr +) after the light is set is not affected but the light cancels immediately afterwards.

So I guess the PAP2T is, or at least thinks it is receiving a cancel MWI signal from the signaling server. The next move would be to substitute the ATA but that starts to get expensive.

Hi Michael,

First things first, what we will look to do next week after the long weekend is to setup some extra logging to our logging servers to see what is actually happening on the box, now it will be the box most probably it is not the signaling as I have looked at the logs and there is no cancel message. So if you can bear with it for a few days we will work with you to resolve the issue and if it's the device I will help you get it replaced if you have problems with Dick Smith.

Testing message waiting:
I asked earlier about disappearing dial tone stutter and it's happened again. (I don't have message waiting led but have no reason to believe that there would be different behaviour with the led.)

Sunday approx 20.20pm I called from my mobile and left a message.
Emails from wxnz.net verified: call notify 20.20, voicemail notify 20.21.
At around 22.10 I lifted handset - NO dial tone stutter.

At 22.14 called again from mobile and left message.
Emails from wxnz.net verified: call notify 22.14, voicemail notify 22.21.
Lifted handset again at 22.45 - NO dial tone stutter.

First call the line was busy. Second call no answer.

There were no other calls with the period and I was browsing internet on and off throughout and didn't notice any interruptions.
I hope those calls give data to check out the problem.

I have actually been testing over the weekend, much to my wifes horror :) but at this stage cannot reproduce the issue on my device, so what I have done is made a couple of changes to chchmjr and crichton configs, I have enabled logging which should pass off a log more logging information to our logging servers, this will enable us to see what is actually happening on the box and see if we can identify why the message waiting indicator is disappearing.

So if chchmjr and crichton could restart your devices to pick up the new settings and redo the tests, hopefully the issue will show itself again with more logging on, just PM me as soon as it occurs and we can go from there.

We have identified the issue with the Message Waiting and can confirm it does go off and it would be around the 1 hour Period, We are working on a solution at the moment and expect to have something shortly

It's some comfort to know the problem is real and not ! I was about to report another - may or may not be of relevance: phoned (no answer) from mobile 15:25 (a few minutes after resetting everything.)
Came back 16:55 to NO stutter dial tone. Have email confirmations: Call Notify 15:25, Voice mail message 15:26.
Looking forward to the stutter being restored to good health!

A change has been made to all configs to help address this problem, this is temporary fix at present as we need to address a underlying issue, the frequency of the issue will be greatly reduced but may still occur, We are looking at more permanent fix but will advise when it has been fully resolved

The work-around seems to do the trick. I made a test call last night. The message waiting light was still flashing this morning.

Made test call Thursday evening 20:04 and stutter was present 21:20 - so it lasted more than an hour!
