I have a number of remote machines that log UV data in the main cities and one situated above the Littleton tunnel in Christchurch.

I do appreciate that Vodafone doesn't support Linux as a host OS.

These remote machines establish a openvpn connection to a server at my work and send data as required.
The link is perpetually always up, I have set wvdial in Linux so that it doesn't idle timeout.

I'm having some problems with a vodem (Huawei E220) freezing after a couple of days operation.
It would seem that the only way to get the link working again is to cold reboot the machine (i.e remove power from the vodem).
Since these are remote unattended machines this is a problem.  Performing dirty tricks with a UPS come to mind...

Can anyone comment on the way in which I'm using these devices, ie Am I just asking for trouble doing it this way.

It's reasonably important that I can talk to these machines via SSH etc for admin reasons which is why I want to link to always be up.

Also - With the GPRS network I found that Vodafone doesn't seem to support LCP echo requests which consequently causes some issues with the ppp link, is this still the case with the 3G network?

Any thoughts very much appreciated.

Graeme

Hate to say it and I am sure I will get flamed but get yourself onto Telecom and use an AxessTel ethernet router, it runs Linux and can be always on. Also supports LCP echo requests. We have a couple of thousand of these out in the market doing all sorts of stuff from alarm monitoring to dumping statistics out of pokie machines in pubs. The unit is very reliable.

I just don't think that the Vodem is the right product for what you are doing...

I'm starting to regret committing to the vodem, in retrospect I should have done some more homework on this.  The source that funds this activity is price sensitive to network equipment purchased,  I (maybe naively) thought the Vodem to be a cost effective solution to the problem.

It seems now that I'll have to implement a watchdog system that resets everything (i.e power cycle) so that things work again.
i.e Can I ping the server, no, OK get the UPS to do a power cycle and things will be OK until the next outage.
I guess the another partial solution is bring the link down every night (no UV!) so that the odds of the link breaking are reduced.

I'm inclined to agree with this comment. There was another thread running recently regarding the connection freezing on Vodem, and it appears to be widespread, although the extent of the problem seems to vary between users. I'm not sure about your query regarding GPRS functionality, but it's worth noting that the Vodem does support GPRS connectivity and user experience would suggest that this is likely to be more reliable than UMTS.

LCP echo requests are not honored on any GSM mobile PPP stack I have seen
add the following to /etc/ppp/options

lcp-echo-interval 0
lcp-echo-failure 0

I have found an old Nokia 5110 with data cable is more reliable than any newer phone (except my 6234 which is rock solid too), and they work in Linux great with gnokii
