I'm still encountering wife acceptance problems with vfx, mostly on call quality through my TC cable.  These are mainly distortion or "fuzz" effects when calling a TC number (9733668 yesterday for example).  It also doesn't help that my Uniden cordless phone for whatever reason seems to emit more hiss connected to the ata as opposed to my TC landine.  (is this a line balance problem?)

One thing that I'm curious about is that when I call another vfx number the sound quality for example of the ringing tone I hear is really good.  If I dial a Telecom or TC number the dial tone is distorted and warbly.

Question - why is this when I'm assuming the same traffic path from my cable box to the vfx exchange is the same.

When I have called inward to my vfx number there is also so echo going on after I have finished some words followed by a pause
(eg like after replying yeh).

With the relatively real time nature of telephone calls and the variable nature of network traffic timing it's amazing voip works as well as it does.

I guess my rambling aside - is it unreasonable to expect vfx to be as good as a landline for audio quality?

Anyway somebody with more knowledge may be able to answer these questions.

Do you have QoS enabled on a device inbetween your ATA/PCs and your TC modem? It can make quite a difference to call quality.

Answering your query re the ringing tone, I believe when you call some networks and destinations (generally digital ones) the ringing tone is generated by the ATA itself, while other destinations (evidently such as ringing an analogue Telecom line), the network (assumedly Telecom's) generates the ringing tone, so it's encoded/compressed.

What kind of Uniden cordless phone do you have? I had a 2.4GHz one (it's gone now, can't check the model) and I noticed its own call encoding was noticeable even on an analogue Telecom line. When plugged into a VoIP line, both the Uniden phone's encoding and VoIP compression combined, the call quality got quite bad.

Using the same VoIP line (in my case Woosh) with a corded phone yielded much better results, as does the Panasonic cordless phone I have now.

We briefly had a 2.4Ghz analog uniden, which wasnt really advertised as such, its just its big special needs looks styling is what made mum get it. Anyway, it had some really severe equalization on the sound - I guess for old people that are deaf, same as they like their treble all the way up on their stereos. Anyway, that made voip calls sound totally aweful.

If you are using the white "spastic phone" with SCR technology (sound clarity range - HA - had none of that) then your problem lies there.

I may be able to shed some light on what is going on here...

My father called up a couple of nights ago, and he also commented on the echo on my VFX number.  I have previously noticed that the audio output level from the PAP2T is quite high, to be honest I think it's a bit too loud for most handsets.  So I tried reducing the HANDSET VOLUME on my Uniden desk phone.  Dad said that the echo then disappeared so long as he spoke quietly.  If he spoke at a normal volume he could still just hear it, but it was much less noticeable.  I think that what is happening here is audio feedback from the handset earpiece to the microphone.  The same effect that you get when someone has their cellphone volume cranked up too high.

Sometimes I also use a long-range cordless phone base (Voyager) plugged into our PAP2T.  The other night a person called who has a habit of shouting into the phone.  The cordless phone base unit distorted quite badly on his voice and reducing the handset volume didn't help because the distortion was occurring in the base unit.  Yet with other callers who speak more quietly, no distortion occurred.

Both of these episodes tell me that the Audio Output Level from the PAP2T is set a bit too high for comfortable use.  I suspect this is also the reason that Graham is hearing the hiss from his Uniden Cordless Phone.  In my opinion, the FXS Port Output Gain needs to be set a bit lower.  I found that a value of -6 worked well with iTalk.  I suspect that WxC have it set a bit higher than that.  No doubt Phil will have some comments to make on this issue.

You have 2 devices does it occur on both or  just the xxxxx081 number,  I made a slight change for you on this number to see if there is any improvement on the Echo
