Hi there

I'm moving back to New Zealand after many years in the UK, and am thinking about whether I am better off bringing a mobile handset with me, and just getting a sim card in New Zealand, or whether Vodafone offers free handsets when you sign up to a fixed term monthly contract? I'd prefer to get the whole package in NZ, but I'm not sure if Vodafone (or any other cell-phone providers) offer a choice of free handsets with the monthly package. Can anyone enlighten me? I need to know if there is an option of a free handset with certain packages, and if there is, what is the quality like??

Hey There,

Yes u can get a package like that however depends on what the current promotions are, you may like to check out the VF website www.vodafone.co.nz inregards to getting a free handset on a fixed term.

Vodafone has a current promo called Create ur own world, where you get a motorola v360 for free and also choosing which plan is best suited for you . if you did'nt like that you could get a subsidy off a handset depending on ur plan though.

i surpose it all depends on what spend ur looking @ per month or what sort of things your looking for in the pricing plan.

if you do end up bringing a handset back from the UK dont 4 get to make sure its not locked onto the network there as it maybe a nightmare trying to get the restrictions removed from the UK network.

I work for vodafone and thats 1 big thing we get all the time is people buying handsets from overseas not realising they are locked onto the network they purchased it from.

personally, i'll get a phone from UK (or even duty free shop at stopovers) , then get the SIM card from Vodafone NZ.
and only Vodafone and Telecom for mobile services still.

Vodafone has very limited ranges of mobilephone (both 3G & GSM). but as suggested by kasidis, have a browse at their website.

personal preference: SonyEricsson.

The strange one to remember is that a phone locked to Vodafone UK has to be unlocked to work with Vodafone NZ.

As a recent (20 month) immigrant I would certainly bring an unlocked phone from the UK.

Can I suggest if you are looking for a postpaid account, you look at Telecom's Flexi Plans? They are plans that do not make you guess your usage in advance and offer 500 national person to person texts for only $10 per month, to all New Zealand mobile networks and there is no need to sign up for this benefit unlike Vodafone's offering where you have to also know how many minutes you plan to use each month.

Flexi comes into variances, an off-peak version (Mytime) which is $30 per month, where you use the $30 like a mobile credit for any non-subscription services such as calls, text, photo messaging or even international calling but excludes things such as mobile Insurance. You first 100 off peak minutes (7pm to 7am Monday to Friday and weekends) will cost 20cents per minute, any off peak minutes there after will cost 10cent to any New Zealand network (Landline and Mobile). Peak calls are charged at $0.99cents.

There is also a peak (Anytime) variance of the Telecom Flexi plan which you pay for the first 50 minutes at $0.82cents, then minutes 50-220 at $0.40cents, minutes 220-500 at $0.35cents and $500 plus at 20cents.

The only thing is you existing phone will not work, you will have to purchase a mobile phone form Telecom when you arrive. As for phone there are various promos are running at different times, so just keep any eye out on the website. For more information see http://www.telecom.co.nz/flexi

in terms of the functions of the handset (mp3, photo/video, games, memory card ...etc), its worth it to get the 3G/GSM phones them from UK.
"mobile number portability" (ie. change from one provider to another while keeping the same number) has commenced from 01/April/2007. but i am not too sure about the handsets compatibility between the 2 companies (if join telecom)....

Vodafone and Telecom use different systems, and the handsets are not interchangeable. There are some very capable Telecom handsets, but these are only avaialble in New Zealand.
