Hello

I have recently switch from Telecom VDSL to Vodafone VDSL, I am still using the old Telecom Technicolor modem in bridge mode to my Asus router which handles the PPPOE login.

Does anyone have on hand or can check on their VF modem the following settings:
username
password
mtu
mru
service name

Have already called VF tech department and they sound like they are just staring blankly into space when I ask these questions...For some weird reason they don't have it listed on their website either. They do have ADSL settings but not VDSL.

Any help here would be much appreciated.

Hi,

You will need to VLAN tag and have it running with no username and password.
Use the HG659 provided?

The technicolor should handle the VLAN tag when set to bridge mode. It did for telecom.. Do you happen to know if vodafone uses the vlan tag 10 also?

Cheers for the tip on username/password. Now just need to find out the other few settings.

The Vodafone one is setup by default and has to use VLAN tagging.
Dont run in bridge mode, Just run a separate AP.

I would much rather have the Asus handling the public ip/incoming connections, it does a very good job and has done for the last year or so. Turning it into just an AP would make it a very very expensive AP.

I spent good money on this router for good reason. I can't imagine why changing ISP using the exact same type connection would be a problem...

My experience with the cheap modems that ISPs hand out; they get killed from torrenting/streaming and I always run into problems with NAT. Thus - I use bridge mode.

I appreciate your help Tim, will have a play with this tonight.

Someone tried to run the HG659 in bridged mode and it didnt work.
Thats what your trying to get going right.

We do use different Authentication types from Telecom. I wouldnt know the settings for the ASUS. A few guys here would do though.

Hi Lobster the Vodafone VDSL is IPoE not PPPoE. Set the Technicolor up as a standard router, with the firewall, AP et al turned off. All you should need do do is to select "Dynamic IP" or something similar where you would normally select PPPoE. It needs to be VLAN 10 and everything else should be ok with default settings.

Set your Asus up with a different network. and create a static route in the Technicolor to it.

It should be functionally the same as running the Technicolor as a bridge. I don't suggest trying this with the HG659 if you have one.

The technicolor out of the box with its limited telecom interface only provices PPPoE, bridged mode, or ADSL mode. There are a few config options for the PPPoE but nothing correct for IPOE. I can with a bit of playing configure it for an IPoE connection, but Im still not sure what settings should be used. My only confirmation so far is vlan tag 10, and im geussing they don't offer a static ip for VDSL ?

Im not keen to use that Huawei POS, how did you get on with your n66u glassboy?? Does it not do IPOE ?? I noticed in your other forum you were attempting to bridge ipoe from your from your Huawei to the Asus. Im currently considering the dsl-n66u -- my current router is a n55u and I haven't got one complaint, other than my silly move to VDSL a month after I purchased it.

There's no PPPoE. PPP is basically an old dial up protocol for encapsulation of IP. I can't find much on IPoE but it appears to drop a lot of the unnecessary encapsulation.

No static IPs, appears that it's just DHCP.

The DSL-N66U is probably the slickest consumer grade router I have every seen. Plug in the DSL cable, tell it VLAN 10 and it's up and working. It has all the features you need to get Netflix working on a Roku. Has excellent parental controls. I highly recommend it.

OK so after all that it works exactly the same as it did on telecom. Technicolor TG589vn set to bridge mode, VDSL, VLAN 10. DSL-N55U (with dual wan firmware -- essential), set to PPPOE, MTU/MRU 1492, service name VODAFONE, username/password irrelevant but i used "user@vodafone.co.nz" and "password". Thanks for all the help guys, up and running in bridgemode with my Asus handling the public ip. Only key difference i noticed, was that I can now use Dynamic IP if I had wanted to, as PPP authentication isnt required but still works.

I dont have the n66u yet glassboy but it's definately on the cards to replace my current setup. Amazing quality networking gear from asus, great customer support via forum, constant firmware updates for problems. Once I had the n55u up and running last year I never had a problem. Restarted it once in a year when upgrading firmware. Much better than the stack of dead belkin, d-link, and thompson modem/routers i've gone through!
