Hi
Is the Xnet Auckland toll free calling area based on Telecomss (small) or Telstra's. Ie Is it free to call Auckland from The hibiscus coast or not?

I am 99% sure it is Telecom's standard area, because Telstra Clear has the big back yard to draw people. I believe Telstra still pays for those calls, just not the customers. But with VFX you pay only 5c per minute outside your toll free area so it is only $3 per hour.

Actually with Telecom you pay for local calls by having it averaged out over everyone's phone bill fixed charge. With VFX you don't pay for local calls, but you also do not have a $40+ fixed charge. A real bargain! The question is, why will a Naked Bitstream line still be so expensive if you will not make free local calls any more? (If someone wants to discuss this, please start a new thread.)

Well I just tried ringing my parents in Warkworth on my VFX line without the 09 and I was connected. Tried with my telecom line
and got the recorded message..blah..blah. please try again.
Now the question...will I charged for that call to Warkworth ?
Tried a call to wellington without 04 didn't work.
So is Warkworth in VFX local area for Auckland.

Well I thought I'd try calling Whangarei from Auckland with no 09. It worked! So my guess is VFX takes the whole number and routes it according. I.E. if you are calling from an 09 area, then what ever number you call (without an area code), it will see the number as an 09nnnnnnn number, so connect to where it needs to go anyway.

That is also how it works in South Africa (or at least the last time I was there!). So VFX is not doing it the same way as we are used to, but it is not uncommon to do it that way. Good to know, I'll also stop appending 09 then!

I think we will soon find the free calling areas a thing of the past anyway. Already seeing a move towards free national (landline) calling of up to x 1000 min per month bundled with your phone deal.
