Hi Geekzone,

About a month ago i started experiencing periods of about 10 - 60 minutes where i would get somewhere between 20 and 60% packet loss, this happens almost every day and usually happens multiple times in one day. The first time it happened, two people i know in surrounding areas (Woolston and Avondale) had the same issue, and one person has been having issues since, i don't know about the other person. I tried contacting Vodafone, but its like talking to a brick wall, so any help here will be appreciated.

Things i have tried:

  • Connecting to the modem directly via Ethernet and USB.
  • Turning everything off and back on again.
  • Checking cables are plugged in correctly.
  • Contacting Vodafone.
Signal Information:

  • Downstream

    • Frequency -  711000000 Hz
    • Signal To Noise Ratio -  34.9 dB
    • Power Level -  -2.7 dBmV
  • Upstream

    • Channel ID - 1
    • Frequency - 30700000 Hz
    • Power - 32.7 dBmV

Modem Logs (I wont post the full log here since it's too large, but this is what it mainly consists of):

1970-01-01 00:00:11 3-Critical R002.0 No Ranging Response received - T3 time-out
1970-01-01 00:00:08 6-Notice M571.1 Ethernet link up - ready to pass packets
2014-09-12 22:51:27 6-Notice M573.0 Modem Is Shutting Down and Rebooting...
2014-09-12 22:49:18 4-Error C403.0 DCC-ACK rejected unknown transaction ID
2014-09-12 22:49:16 4-Error C401.0 DCC-ACK not received
2014-09-12 19:21:01 4-Error C403.0 DCC-ACK rejected unknown transaction ID
2014-09-12 19:21:01 4-Error C401.0 DCC-ACK not received
1970-01-01 00:00:08 6-Notice M571.1 Ethernet link up - ready to pass packets

The "No Ranging Response received - T3 time-out" errors are rare, but the DCC-ACK errors are very common.

What DNS servers are you using? Cable HFC network is going thru some planned upgrades at the moment due to be completed late October / Early November

Have you tried the official DNS for HFC (-- 203.97.78.43 -- 203.97.78.44 )?

I will try them, although if i am for example connecting to a Teamspeak server using an IP address the DNS servers shouldn't be an issue right?

I have also experienced issues (having them right now actually) where general browsing would be intermittently slow.
I assume its packet loss too, although I haven't done any tests.
I've also tried changing DNS to Googles today, but its making no difference.

What are the upgrades that are happening? And are performance problems expected?

I am having issues right now as well, well i have been for the last hour or so. It looks like another person on my Teamspeak server is also having issues.

Interesting. It would be helpful if you folks could post WHERE are you located. I am in Johnsonville and haven't noticed anything really - actually have just finished watching half of The Sound of Music, streaming on Amazon Instant Video in HD, with no problems.

What issue exactly?

What you're highlighting in red isn't necessarily an issue. It's core routers dropping ICMP traffic which is perfectly normal.

Packet loss is shown in MTR when it's cascading loss.

I am in Bexley, Christchurch someone else is in Avondale, Christchurch. We have been at around 2-6% for the last 2 hours, so not as bad as usual but it certainly makes things using UDP horrible to use.

Surely its demonstrating that these servers are under heavy load, they all have 4x the normal ping and usually do not drop this many packets. That route is normally 50 ms.

Looks like saturation on Vodafone's connectivity to AU which I'm seeing here as well.

Possibly. Now that you say this, I tried a few Australian websites and they all seem to be taking 45 seconds or more to load.

Maybe they're trying to route through Auckland?
