Traveling overseas, I decided to wait a day or two to get a local sim card. To my surprise, I was receiving phone calls from NZ numbers. To avoid any costs, I switched to Airplane mode (and leaving my phone on pointless) until I switched sim cards.
I know you're able to turn off data roaming but is there a way to just switch off global roaming? Global roaming (at least with Vodafone) just isn't an option for me and I like being able to use wifi until I'm able to switch to local sim cards when I'm overseas.

Ring Vodafone and disable it if you don't want it.

I'm pretty sure you can enable/disable it from the customer portal as well.

mojojojo: Prepay

Roaming is on by default for all Prepay connections, If you don't want to use roaming then jusk keep SIM card to the side while away

Or (for most Androids I've tried), enable airplane mode and then turn wifi back on.

Except many apps will just throw a wobbly when in airplane mode that they need a connection to work without even trying.

I really wish there was a total 3g radio off selector on phones like there is a wifi off selector.

iPhones have this exact "3G off" toggle (def. since IOS7), but it just 'forces' 2G, not actually "data off" :(

How about just turning off data roaming (or mobile data entirely) in your phone and keeping the sim active. Then you can read incoming texts (no cost to receive normal texts) and see if there are incoming calls. Charges are generated for receiving calls (you don't have to answer them if you don't want to), making calls and texts and using data.

With On Account $5 daily roaming has really changed how people use their phones. I recently had a 20 minute call from a family member in New York seeking some family tech support - didn't cost them any extra considering they're on one of our Red plans.
