Hi there,

I've been having an on-going issue with Vodafone since September last year. The problem I have is that in low 4G reception; my phone (used to be an S4 now a Note 4, it happens on both) doesn't send SMS until it then changes down to HSPA+ or 3G but often doesn't do this until the messages have failed, usually multiple times. From what I understand this shouldn't be happening because SMS don't require a handoff like phone calls, in fact if I turn my phone into 4G only or 3G the problem is eliminated but each with its own problems.

These failed messages apparently do not show up on Vodafone's server and they therefore cannot prove the problem exists. There are sporadic forum posts on the internet about this problem happening but never a solution, usually always because the telco can't locate the problem.

I've kept logs, changed sims, obviously its happens on 2 different handsets, tried different apps (a point of contention), tried logcats all to no avail.

So i'm appealing on here to see if anyone else has this problem, if they do maybe I can persuade Vodafone to do something about it. If you can please help.

Can you be more specific about location, please?

I live in Parnell, Auckland where it occurs most often, although I have had it occur elsewhere before but rarely. The common variable is low 4G reception but usually high or full HSPA+ or 3G.

Is the handset an import or is it purchased from an authorised Vodafone NZ retailer and is the SMS issue easy to replicate?

No point replacing the SIM card this will add zero value, SIM is only used to ID the subscriber onto the mobile network

No, the phone is not an import in a N-910U standard NZ Note 4 (notably without lollipop). I actually won it from Vodafone.
It's interesting you say that because I thought that too but I was continually told to change it.

So if you are in full 4G coverage in another location the SMS fail to send as well or is it single location only?

No. If there is full 4G then I have no issues. It only occurs when it is on low 4G but it will prefer this to HSPA+ or 3G and SMS will fail until it changes. By low i mean no bars or in the logcats it referred to "lte 0x0"

Not single location it occurs wherever the signal strength is like this.

and this only happens insidea building / house?

Sounds more like a bad luck location issue and it's very fringe 4G 1800Mhz but OK 3G 900Mhz and the handset is getting into a confused state,

2147483647 dbm. Yeah thats what it seems to be is a bad luck location issue unfortunately I have been holding out hope for a solution and everyone I have been dealing with has not been forthcoming admitting it was a location issue. Not always inside a building no.

Why is it not showing up on the servers though? I assume you work at Vodafone?

Does not happen on my handset, Do you keep the handset in a after market case?

Most apps only seem to do dbm, but will let you know.

Correct. Even if I go into service mode and turn on only LTE bands, it eliminates the problem ( I obviously can't make phone calls then).
The problem appears to be something to do with it being confused about whether to send on 3G or 4G but instead it just fails and often.
