Hi,
I have been lurking in the background for sometime waiting (and waiting) for NDSL/VFX only option. Now the moment is near I have a couple of questions relavant to a small business and using VFX as our ONLY service provider.

Will a standard eftpos machine work reliably?? and faxing?? being both anlogue devices I'm seeing a few issues.

Does/will VFX have a fax to email service? I really hate faxing but as yet no way around receiving a few.

And if VFX will sometime support a fax to e-mail service for receiving faxes, will VFX also support an e-mail to fax service for sending faxes?

I can tell you from personal experience that faxing over VFX works fine so long as the fax machine at the other end is in NZ. International Faxing is not reliable at this stage.

Personally, I don't use EFTPOS, but other people have successfully used it over VFX. Maverick will be able to confirm this for you tomorrow.

Not yet, but it is coming. As an interim measure, I have been using Faxaway:

This service is a bargain at only US$1 per month. I have been using it for almost 2 years now and reliability is rock-solid. There is one slight catch, which is the reason I will switch to the VFX Fax to e-mail service when it is available:

Faxaway only has US numbers.

However, you can send a one-page fax to a US number for about 15c, so it's not a big deal really so long as you aren't receiving screeds of faxes every day. I receive one or two per day on average, and Faxaway is the most economical option for that level of usage. There are a couple of NZ-based Fax to e-mail services, but they typically charge $13 - $20 per month and then around 10c per page IIRC.

Yes we will havea Fax to Email service( not EMail to Fax sorry), expect this next year, as for eftpos there should be generally no issues with this, we actually have an eftpos installer that puts these in for customers on VFX .

Like any cost savings you should be asking yourself what the potential impact to your business is in the instance you loose service. If you are doing a lot of EFTPOS transations in a busy retail environment then a UBS fault taking out your EFTPOS ability once or twice a year might wipe out any savings you got from ditching analog service.

This of course does not just apply to EFTPOS over VoIP but risk analysis across your whole business, I'm not trying to spread FUD here. Given the price difference between analog line + UBS and NDSL it might be prudent in some cases to retain alanog service for awhile longer yet.

Are there not eftpos terminals that just go out over the internet rather then a dialup modem?

Most large retailers still use leased circuits for EFTPOS but this is all changing to TCP/IP based stuff next year with the demise of leased circuits not far away with the NGN. I'm sure we'll see a lot more TCP/IP based EFTPOS terminals hitting the market including standalone models, they are still quite rare at present.

There are indeed, also gateway devices similar to ATAs designed for EFTPOS terminals.
