can any one suggest a free utitlity to run on windows xp for display/announce the caller?  thanks

I assume you want it for VFX.  You need  modem plugged into the VFX port.  There is heaps of programs on the internet that will do what you want, e.g. from http://www.traysoft.com/

What we really want is a utility that communicates with the VFX device over Ethernet and quaries it to see if there is an incoming call and what the number is.  I believe the info is already on the status page, so perhaps someone can write a nifty utility that does this.  I do not think there will be anything that already does it.  It will be the simplest to use that old modem sitting on the shelf...

Thanks, I was hoping for something that as you suggest avoids the need for a modem (shouldnt really be required in this day and age).

That old modem sitting on the shelf probably doesn't even support caller ID.
