I upgraded to FibreX 1000Mbps on Friday in Wellington and I'm experiencing very low speedtest results on the Wellington Vodafone server. I'm using the standard TC44000VDF modem and HG659 wireless router, and my desktop PC is using an Asus AC56 PCIE wifi card. I'm using the 5Ghz band, and the computer is about 8m away from the router with 1 wall and a door in between, 5GHz signal strength is -59dB (-50dB on the 2.4GHz band). I've checked for interference, and there aren't any other 5GHz signals around.

Speedtest runs on the Wellington Vodafone server obtain about ~35Mbps down / ~35Mbps up. If I use a laptop on the 2.4GHz band adjacent (1m) to the wifi router or on ethernet I get about 80/35. There have been a few runs where I've gotten in the 150up/100down range on Friday evening/Saturday morning with my desktop wifi, but that's' the highest I've seen. Is there a problem with my setup or with Vodafone's network? Any suggestions for things to try? Thanks for the help.

try testing without using wireless to get a baseline speed.

I did use ethernet on my laptop, it gets about 80/30. Breaking down the desktop to haul it across the house is a bit of a mission.

WiFi is NOT a replacement for Ethernet. If you want speeds then you need to run Ethernet to your devices. It also sounds like your laptop does not have Gigabit Ethernet.

The fact that I was getting 150Mbps two days ago with the same setup would suggest that there's a problem on Vodafone's end. On their status page they have: Wellington "Customers may be experiencing an intermittent loss of High Speed Internet services" still under investigation from Friday night but I don't know how to interpret that.

You can't say that it is Vodafone without doing your part by testing with Ethernet on a gigabit capable device.

I have it and have the same issue - I connected via ethernet and speeds improved to about 300mbps but it still isnt gigabit - are there any known tweaks that could be made to router settings?

Just remember there are MANY devices out there that don't support Gigabit speeds even if you've got them hooked up to Gigabit. For example, my Chromebook:

Test done over Ethernet on a Chromebook. Now, if I do this on a PC I get 944Mbit down, 440Mbit up connected to the same switch etc. There are also apps like firewall programs that can infulance your Speedtest results - we're at the stage where routers and our devices are not fast enough for our internet so ensure you're testing via Ethernet on multiple devices using the router Vodafone have provided and if you're basing it off the Speedtest then I've found running it in Chrome works best. Honestly though, real world performance wise you'll never notice the difference between 200Mbit and 1Gbit on internet since there are many services out there that cap out at around 200Mbit anyway.

Surely we will start to see the horrid CIR stats rearing their heads soon. (which I suspect will be the real-life ~200Mbps we are seeing) Like the days of 'linespeed' ADSL that never quite made it for most.

I mean, cabinets will have a limited number of feed fibres. So you might have 1Gbps to the node, but from there only 240-480Gbps to exchange for you and everyone on it, no?. And unless I'm looking at Tb vs Gbps wrong even the SX cable at 5.4Tbps means only 5400 users with 1Gbps home accounts could *thoretically* saturate it in best world scenario. Which doesn't seem like much if it were even possible.

I just had FibreX installed 2 hours ago on the highest plan. I was on cable ultra, 130/10 and my speed dropped from 130/10 to 60/90. After about 10 speed tests I once got 200/90 but that quickly went away. Something is definitely wrong on their end.

An upgrade should not be slower.

Update: day 2 is much faster, 500/90 mbit on the local speedtest (vodafone Wellington server, 8ms ping). Of course a local speedtest isn't that indicative of real world usage, as I don't really care how fast the Vodafone website loads :)

Practically speaking, surfing and downloading from overseas feels faster. I got 32/13 mbit to a VPN in Los Angeles and Netflix loads faster and browses faster on the AppleTV.

Fingers crossed this will be the new normal, I can live with that. :)

Used a PC - core i5 and gig ethernet to the router. Still only 300mbps. Something isnt right.

what router are you running, if you look at the huge cable thread unless you have a decent device and/or have it configured correctly you will struggle to get gigabit speeds
