I have been reading the gigabyte fibre forums looking for solutions but have struggled to find a concise summary of what is causing problems.

I recently upgraded to FibreX Max in Wellington (Lyall Bay)

Surprised to find my Nighthawk R8000 disconnected and the HG659 in it's place.

Have since turned off the HG659 WiFi connected the R8000 in bridge mode and using that for WiFi

I also have a LinkSys AC2300 in bridge mode downstairs (hardwired) to provide WiFi to the bottom floors of the house.

Initially pleased getting the expected 900+ speeds on Ookla on Ethernet connected PC's about half that 450 on Mac's.

However since the 15th of December have been getting multiple outages, no error message on any of my routers, just "hanging".

Problem seems to be with the Optical Modem and connection issues there.  Vodafone has sent around a technician who changed the connector to the house, changed the faceplate and new cables.  However, problem continues with 5-6 outages per day. Some <1minute some 10-15. minutes.  As we do business from home this is very inconvenient loosing our cloud connection all the time.  I'm looking for answers, as currently Vodafone seems without any.

At one stage I was rebooting the Modem and the Router but now I just leave it as it always "comes back"

1. Is this a problem at my end, I have read in some forums that the HG659 doesn't like more than 20 devices.  We are close to 30.

2. I know how to make my R8000 work as the principal router, should I use that instead of the HG659, though some forums state that this may decrease speed.

3. Does anyone know much about the optical modem (Techicolor) and whether changes to it could be of benefit.

I would appreciate any help and hope that this post becomes a summary post for solutions.

The Technicolor is a cable modem. Not optical. Does the lights on it change when it drops?

Have you tried disconnecting everything and connecting just one computer to the HG659? Does this help?

The cable modem has shown a couple of errors.

- It does go "offline" i.e. the online light goes out, however the Up Stream and Down Stream stay on.

- I have had "outages", however and I can't see any change to the LED lights.

I will try your idea of reducing the LAN traffic, literally starting with one machine and then adding "segments" will see if this stops the problem.

Its the HG659 it can not handle more than 1 device attached. Do yourself a favor and get rid of it. Try the R8000 as the primary router. You need to configure the wan to VLAN 10 and test.

Mikrotek have a good router that is known to work - Its just hard to configure. https://www.gowifi.co.nz/routers-non-wireless/rb750gr3.html Then use the 2 routers you already has a wireless access points.

I have experienced intermittent dropouts of the cable modem exactly as you have described. Typically the connection would drop out at least once a week, and power cycling the modem would reestablish the connection. Doesn't appear to be a fault with the router, as I observe the same symptoms with both the supplied HG659 and a Ubiquiti Edgerouter Lite.

We had to power cycle the modem 4 times one evening, which prompted us to contact Vodafone support. They were very responsive and sent a technician around within two days, so kudos for that. The tech replaced the Cat5 cable between the modem and the router (doubt this achieved anything), and cleaned some corrosion on the coax at the power pole (may have helped). It's been a bit over a week since then and our connection seems a bit more stable, but we have still experienced one dropout since the technician visited.

On the plus side, when the connection is up I have no trouble achieving real-world speeds in the range of 500-1000Mbps, unlike some others are reporting. Usually I need to run downloads off several servers in parallel to do this. I regard lower speeds as not-Vodafones-fault, as we are on the cutting edge here and lower speeds are likely to be caused by bottlenecks outside of VF's network.

Update.

I have removed the HG659 and using the R8000 as the main router.

Excellent speed results so far, best since the change.

Now waiting to see if there will be any dropouts.  Entire Family is writing down disconnect times.

I do have one further question about set-up for the R8000 (Netgear Nighthawk X6) I set the IPv6 to AUTO CONFIG which later changed itself to 6to4 Tunnel and seems happy.  However i notice my prefix is 128 where as some Vodafone literature states it should be 56.  Is this an issue?  I know IPv6 is not 'operational' at present but i want to have the correct set-up.  Any IPv6 advice ?

Unfortunately looks like it's a Vodafone thing.

After 24 hours of stability today while at work my NAS drive dutifully informs me.

No changes my end (i have stopped fiddling around), LOW load only two users on, no gamers no streaming.

Will make more contact with Vodafone.

Still getting ongoing outages.

The MOST common error on the Technicolor modem is

Online OFF

Up Stream blinking.

Anyone know how to interrogate the Technicolor modem or check it's error logs?

Looks like I'll have to wait until after the seasonal breaks for a solution.

I haven't gotten around to doing it myself, but I'm reliably advised it's 192.168.100.1 admin/password.

Thanks for the 192.168.100.1 tip it has allowed to see a couple of things.

The drop outs have gotten worse, down to only being up for minutes now before going down.

Interesting that it seems to be weather dependent so I imagine it's going to be something simple like a loose connection out at the street level.

From the Modem which is not very intuitive I know that.

When it is up it shows.

Upstream just empty unknown channels.

Not sure if anyone knows what this means but it certainly seems to be when the Channel 1 downstream gets "lost" on the wrong frequency.

It's all greek to me.

All credit to Vodafone the actually followed up today (New Years Day)

They can't actually fix it today of course but are definitely aware of the issue and being very proactive.

There will be a small gap now because of personal holidays, but when I have a technical solution I'll share it with everyone.

online off

upstream blinking.

been having same fault here for the last couple of weeks, kapiti, lasts about 30secs a few times an evening. But im still on the 130/10 plan with the cisco modem.

It maybe unrelated, but I suspect its not just the fibrex plans.
