I just signed up to a Red + $149 a month plan three weeks ago and I have seven days left to decide if I like the network. I will not like it as my friends on other networks are able to get or pre-order some kind of "unlimited" vs my 15GB. 2 Degrees has a vague "fair use policy", whereas Skinny Direct and Spark say you may use 22GB per month and then they /may/ slow you down. I would say Spark's version of it is clearer.

Having a slower connection would not bother me too much, so come on Vodafone join in the fun, I would rather stick with the same provider I get for two FibreX connections in Wellington but the idea of "unlimited" data is very tempting.

Examples:

https://skinnydirect.co.nz/pre-order

You need to ask yourself do you need that much data? Is 15Gb fine for now and will it cut the mustard until Vodafone allow a review to happen after a certain period of time.

I only use about 2-3Gb/mth on my vodafone mobile. And thats probably a heavy month.

I suspect that IF Spark and 2 Degrees are going head to head with unlimited 3G/4G data, there might be an announcement from Vodafone. And i also suspect that after about ~25GB you may experience a degraded service, but I do not know if this will be true or not.

I use a lot of data. I only don't use more due to cost. The 25GB+15GB test drive for the first month, is almost gone. I like having everything backed up the cloud, watching movies on the train and bus, and during summer streaming music and things at the beach. I also walk a lot, 1-2-3 hours a day and I use data during that time as well. My usage is far beyond the average person, I know this. That's why these other telco's made a plan for people such as myself. The reason I post here is because I remember Vodafone cable, when it was called TelstraClear and how many years it took them to even match other providers offering 10GB, 20GB, 40GB. I was always last and at the time a teenager so I had no choice lol, but now I do. ;)

I want this unlimited plan also but I hate to see if the whole network is slowed down because of this.

"* Non-stop data - NZ data only"

Is this meaning traffic that doesnt route outside of NZ is free like slingshot used to do?

Or only to use in this country and doesnt apply for roaming?

It means data used in NZ, i.e. you can do whatever you want as long as you are in NZ.

I'd hope so!! Im on the $149 a month plan plus the $20 thing for my sibling and we use the 15GB up by the end!

How will you know if I’m tethering or hotspotting?

The Spark Freedom plan is restricted for mobile use only. Spark reserves the right to monitor data usage and customer volumes, to ensure customers are complying with terms of use. Service may be slowed, suspended, terminated, or restricted for: misuse, or interference with our network.

That comment of theirs also implies they cant stop you at all but will scare you into thinking they can. I think its really dumb for them to outright say that, Joe Blogg who got to a hotel and wants to tether his iPhone to his macbook to use data now "isnt allowed to".

All the "unlimited" plans are restricted to mobiles only.

I have asked spark to include a $5 add on for 1gig that expires after 7 days for hotspotting or tethering over twitter and they were going to pass it on to the higher ups as a suggestion

All telco's can see if you are hot spotting etc with a phone.

How can they see what my phone is doing with the data they are providing?
Apart from desktop http requests if i were to use a VPN they would have no idea?

There is info in the other threads about how they can do this.  US etc has been doing it for years with their "unlimited" plans for mobiles.

At the end of the day despite all the hype such a plan is probably going to appeal to probably 0.01% of mobile users in NZ.

Given their policy of data usage virtually defeats the purpose of having a large data plan.. Id suspect the uptake would be quite low. Id rather my 15GB that i can actually use than Unlimited i can't use for tethering a laptop or tablet. Given our extortionate pricing in New Zealand how does one justify? Sure it will appeal to someone.

I am curious how Vodafone will do this plan - what about Red Share? what about the third SIM that was meant for tablet? (all in one account)

So I am cautiously waiting. I only pay $80 for 15GB. If moving unlimited means I am going to lose all that, probably not worth it. I rather if they reduce the price for additional data, let say $50 for another 10GB or something. I will be all over that!

The third sims had calling and SMS disabled so was just a data sim. They worked well!
I use Red Share for my sister and I, She pays nothing and gets half, Works out fair i suppose...
How the heck do you pay $80 for 15GB O_o
