You should just need to set it on automatic so the xbox gets an IP from your router.

What is the brand & model of your ADSL modem? Unless you are using 'Internet Sharing' and have two network cards in your PC then you should NOT plug the Xbox into your computer. If your ADSL modem has more than one network (ethernet) ports then plug the Xbox into one of these, otherwise you will need to get a switch, router or hub to provide access for both computer and Xbox. Also, make sure UPnP is enabled in the modem and/or router. As a test, plug the Xbox into the modem instead of the PC & do a Xbox connection test.
