Hi - does anyone have any direct contacts at the right level (i.e. not calling Helpdesk) locally in Wellington? A 10-15m piece of metal guttering has ripped off the external wall of a multi storey building in Brooklyn, Wellington and is currently precariously leaning on a power pole on the pole hung VF cabling below the power wires. In the next gust of wind the whole lot is going to come down and smash a car / person, and take out some of VF infrastructure in the process. Have tried calling council / power company / property manager but no avail. Everyone blames someone else. No-ones prepared to touch it due to involving "power lines" and I have no confidence in the normal VF Helpdesk to go anywhere.

I usually tell the Council of such matters, and include the words "hope no one gets hurt or killed" ... try that with them and property owner and police and VF ... all in writing of course.

The pole is probably owned by the Wellington Lines company and they should be the ones to deal with it.

If there is a danger to the public's safety then its the Police you should be contacting

You mean Fire in the case of immediate electrical / weather-related hazards...

" If you tangle an item on a power line, never try to remove it yourself.

In high winds, power lines can clash together, causing bright flashes and loud bangs, which can cause power surges and outages, which must be reported.

In any instance where you are concerned about damaged poles and downed or clashing lines, you should contact us IMMEDIATELY. Call 0800 248 148 to report the damage, treat any lines or cables as live and keep all people well away from the area."

Even if the gutter isn't on the actual power line it is likely to be within 4m. I'm surprised the lines company would be "passing the buck". What do the Fire Brigade do, ring WE with more authority?

Pretty much; they also have the resources and training on-call to immediately secure the incident until "lines" arrive.

As a general rule in any emergency (life or property in danger) only number you need to worry about is 111:

Where a person needs medical attention obviously ask for Ambulance.
Where a person or animal needs to be subdued ask for Police.
For pretty much everything else ask for Fire (fire, electrical, floods, rescue etc).

Obviously they will coordinate with each other and the appropriate authorities.
