Hi

I was just wondering why TCL (or was it just Telstra) stopped putting in more cable?

Are they going to wait and put in fibre to homes instead?  How does the amount of data for Internet and TV that can be sent down cable compare to fibre (I suppose this is bandwidth)?  Will it be a long time before NZ really gets fibre in the home?

The short answer is that the cable network was laid before Telstra owned the company and the current network has not been expanded in recent times.  For more detail go here.

It would seem that those who paid for the existing cable to be laid took a punt that this would produce the required return on investment.  Its worth noting that this all occured well before LLU came into play and it would seem that there would not be an adequate return from laying what is effectively another separate network.

LLU is simply increased investment in the fringes of the network (i.e. in the "local loop" portion of it), and effectively killed some opportunities for competing seperate networks to thrive (or launch to start with).

Shame. I have seen zero benefit for me from unbundling so far, except the option of naked DSL with some ISPs :( Would far prefer seperate competing networks.
