Hi all,

Having problems with a Voda supplied HG659 on a newly provisioned Fibre circuit (business)

We have 3 port forward rules set which seem to get forgotten by the router periodically causing problems primarily for our CCTV monitoring.

The process I use to create the rules is by logging in as Admin on the router, then find the Lan device by Mac address and assigning the port forward rule to it. It does work for a few days but then seems to forget it.

Is there some kind of config that is being pushed to the router by voda perhaps which is overwriting the config on the modem? Or something more benign such as me just not knowing how to create a port forward properly?

Are you running the latest (B026) firmware? See the Vodafone Help page.

It might be trying to save you from bad things happening! Port forwards to CCTV is generally a bad idea - VPN access would be better.

Unsure on that - it's remote to me so will have to check - is this a known problem with older versions of firmware? I do understand that when the firmware is updated it will be to factory default.

Yep I get that its not best practice but unfortunately they opted not to buy a firewall with VPN capability and I'm not using the built in VPN stuff on the Huawei - requirement is for viewing the cameras remotely from phone on a bespoke port. Not much more I can do on that front unfortunately.

Which username/password combo are you logging in with (if default)? I believe that may affect whether settings are saved in some circumstances.

I haven't got the list in front of me, but i think the latest firmware fixed an issue with port fwds. Another thread here has details. Also it shouldn't reset your settings, unless you configured them as admin user.

What is the number of connected devices? Is it over 10 or 16 or whatever the limit was at one stage... new firmware might be the fix in that situation.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

Definitely more that 10 connected devices - it's supplied as a business connection router - we have a minimum of 20 devices attached often many more ... will update the firmware and see if the problem goes away.

Have had this on more than on router, upgrading the firmware & logging in as super admin did nothing.

Replacing the router with a better one fixed the issue :-) i.e. not a ISP supplied one.

Just save yourself some grief & replace it.
Ive also seen issues on some ISP routers where some ports wouldnt forward , even via DMZ . (and other weird issues)

Have a look at both replacing the router and setting up a Raspberry Pi running PiVPN for the camera side of things. You can then use any OpenVPN app on a Smartphone / tablet / PC to access the cameras securely. I would never port forward to a DVR or to any cameras due to the massive security risk.

The Ubiquiti USG is a very good choice for a small business combined with an UniFi Switch + UniFi access point.

I had a similar set up, and as mentioned, run a raspberry pi with piVPN for remote access to my camera. Also I am pretty sure your router has a 32? device limit before it forgets rules, and it forgets them based on first created first lost. It does not care if the device is currently active on the network. However I did not run anywhere near 32 devices so never ran into any issues with the router.
