Hi all

I have just purchased a Panasonic DMR-EH57 DVD recorder.

It is connected to a slightly old Sony television, and a Telstra SKY box.

My problem is that I can't tune the channels on the DVDR: Manual Tuning gives the message "No signal" and the Automatic SETup Tuning says that no channels are found.

It seems to want to be connected to an aerial, but that doesn't seem necessary since we have the SKY box, right?

I have a coaxial cable that came with the DVDR, but it has a "fatter" connecting wire than what will fit into the SKY box (it has a plug for one of the needle-like coaxial cable connections).

The TV only has 3 sets of yellow/black AV plugs and a "thicker" coaxial plug.

I can currently only record shows based on whatever channel the SKY box is on, but I was under the impression that I could record shows by the G-codes or a timer, so I didn't necessarily have to have the TV set on the channel.

If anyone can offer some advice, it would be a big help and likely save a marriage (it was my husband's idea to buy the DVDR!).

TelstraClear set top box receives RF digital cable signal and decodes and outputs only one channel at a time via composite or svideo.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

Hi

You're confusing TCL with Sky a bit here :)

Do you have a digital or analogue set top box for TCL TV?

Your DVD Recorder can't tune to channels as there is nothing plugged into it's aerial socket most likely.

Analogue and Digital TV:

Get hold of a AV Cable (Normally with Yellow, Red and Black plugs on the end). plug the yellow end into Video Out on the TCL set top box and into the video in on your DVD Recorder. Plug the Red and Black plugs into the left and right audio jacks on the back of the TCL Set Top box and the DVD Recorder.

To allow your DVD Recorder to record 'off the roof' as such you'd need to plug a seperate aerial into it's 'RF In' socket.
Or, you could (if you have one) plug a lead from the 'to tv' or 'TV Out' socket into the 'RF IN' socket on your DVD Recorder.
This will allow you to record seperate from the channel tuned to on the set top box (you'll pick up the FTA channels).

Thanks, Grant! Obviously my knowledge here is minimal.

I suppose we now have to work on getting an aerial then... It's annoying when toys don't work the way we expect them to.

You may not need an aerial.
Do you have a spare cable (RF) with the nut-type screw terminal on each end?

As ZollyMonsta says if you use the TV out F type connector on the digital box and feed that into your RF connector on the recorder will be able to tune in the free channels (like 1, 2 and 3) on the recorder and record them independant of what the STB is set to.

Well, the Telstra box has a place where one of the needle-like coaxial cables could go.

But the coaxial connection on the DVDR is the kind that's thicker and rounded at the end. (I hope that makes sense)

I had originally planned to hook up the TV/DVDR/Telstra box similar to how you would hook up a TV/VCR/Telstra set-up. But since the coaxial connection on the box had a different "width" than that on the DVDR, I didn't think it was possible.

I don't suppose they make cables that have two different ends?

Yep.. thats right.. you can use a coax lead which you may have spare (same as what goes from the wall jack to the cable tv box..
You'll need to get an 'f connector to RF adapter' which will mean you can then plug the other end into the 'RF IN' socket on your DVD Recorder.
