Hi all

I have xnet broadband at my current address and find the service excellent. I am about to move house and when I contacted world exchange to sort out the broadband move, they suggested I look at vxf. It sounds brilliant :) but I have a few questions:

1st of all, the house has a burglar alarm system that apparently rings my mobile if it is activated - will this still work?

Over the phone I get quoted 69.99 for broadband and voice, but on the web it quotes 11.25 per month for vxf, waived for broadband users. So why am I quoted more? (I pay 35 for broadband at the moment)

I understand that the analogue line that I would normally get via telecom is not required. What then does my ADSL router (Linksys WAG200G) plug into (or would this be a redundant piece of equipment and if so, what do I need to buy?)

There are 5 phone extensions around the house I am buying, can I still have them connected and is it something that I'd be able to sort myself

Will Sky work through vxf?

Can I use my existing phone number (telecom say I can take it to the new property)?

Will I require an engineer to call?

Am I better to move telecom to the new house ($55 charge) then consider vxf afterwards?

1. VFX will not work with burgular alarms unless they're designed for use with VoIP or IP services.

2. 69.95 is for Xnet Fusion, which combines VFX VoIP and broadband as one package, and is a completely Naked DSL service.

3. The copper line is still used, but no analogue phone service will be active on it, so the ADSL router will still work.

4. You will need to have a VoIP - phone adapter to be attached to a router, and then extended throughout the house. You will not be able to directly plug a phone into a phone jack.

5. Interactive services in SKY will not work over VFX. You can order movies by calling SKY.

6. If there is already a line at the house, I don't think there is a need for an engineer to come to your place (not completely sure)

7. If you only want a VoIP/Naked DSL solution, then why not just have it from the start?

We have VFX over wireless so no analogue phone line. I have wired our burgler alarm through the VFX (and all other phone extensions in the house).

The alarm is programmed to dial our cellphones (in order) when the alarm is activated. It still does this and we can see from caller id that our alarm has been activated. There is obviously no data coming down the cell connection though.

I think I may do some more research (starting by finding a manual for the alarm) as this was one of the main reasons for not choosing VXF...

I also have an alarm installed and it works happily over any VoIP system including VFX because it simply dials the number and then plays a siren sound.

If however your alarm system is remotely monitored, it will not work via VFX unless you get an IP alarm interface installed.

Secondly, we have MySky and it works fine over VFX. However, some of the older Sky decoders don't work according to reports I have seen. As Manhinli has said above, you can order movies by phoning Sky, but it is much nicer just to do it from the remote, and that works perfectly with MySky over VFX

Our Mysky works over VFX also. The smart features are great. I could imagine the hassle of going back to a phone without smart features like caller ID would be a real downer. Even my wife loves it.

These are usually specific to your alarm.

Thanks for all the replies.

I move into my new home this weekend, so will be a bit hectic for a week or so. I don't think the missus will be to impresses if I start fiddling with the alarm etc whilst she's lugging boxes around :0(

I'll revisit this when I'm settled - ok to ask questions then?

Oh one thing at the moment - can I keep my existing number? The FAQ on the wxchg site is a bit confusing as in one it says yes and another it says you'll be issued with one.

I am in Pukekohe and so have Compass Wireless which used to be Wired Country. They put an aerial on your roof which is a diamond shape. I pay $50 per month for 1 MB down / 256 K up and 5 GB of data. On top of that I pay $11.25 for VFX. So, for $60 odd we get phone and broadband! They cover a chunk of auckland and have coverage maps at www.compass.net.nz.

I have exactly the same setup except a 2Mb / 1Mb connection, how do you find VFX on your connection ?

It had a few hiccups when we first started using it. I tracked it down to having the WRTP54g lying flat. Since I put the WRTP vertically it has been solid as a rock. It is more reliable than my father in laws Telecom phone at the moment! The only on-going issue is picking up call waiting which seems to be intermittent . It is almost as if the WRTP doesn't pick up the hook flash properly.

It could be the cordless phone we are using (it lets you specify the number of milliseconds for the hook flash). It is not a biggie as the caller ID comes up on the cordless phone while we are on the call (awesome feature!) so we just call back. It is normally the in-laws anyway!

There is no lag or drop outs at all. The Compass Wireless connection seems to be perfect for VOIP.
