Hi everyone

I have just setup a WRT54GL with DD-WRT as per the instructions on this forum. It's great! I had a WRT54G that was a nightmare, having to reboot the thing every 10 minutes due to the ARP issue..

However, I have some concerns about the new installation. Everytime I login to look at the bandwidth used or the bandwidth monitor for the WAN connection on the router it shows an alarming amount of data being used, each day, when no one is in the house (2gb today) I notice that the cable modem light is flashing like crazy, but that's always been that way...

As it stands tonight I'm unable to login to their usage meter, I'm getting an error message at login (a variable is undefined or some garbage like that). I wanted to see if in fact all this traffic is being reflected on their meter.

I have gone through each PC on the lan and done netstat / NBTSTAT and there are no active connections... Also, after SSHing into the router and doing a NETSTAT the only active connection was the machine I was connecting to it.

I guess I just want to know if TCL are counting this data usage towards my monthly allowance, or if its just all the ARP requests that are flooding their network.

I turned logging on the router and looked at the incoming connections, and it was dropping about 5 - 6 packets every time i pressed refresh.

Is anyone able to clarify this? I don't really want to call them if I don't have to...

Sorry, I should have also mentioned .. in the bandwidth monitor tab of DD-WRT the incoming bandwidth is a constand 89 / 90 k/s ... however the incoming is 0 k/s.

Does anyone have any idea what would be causing this?

The usage meter is currently broken & is being looked into (I called them).

You may also want to correct your sys clock :)

In regards to the data transfer your router is reporting... Have you disco'd other equipmeent items 1 at a time to isolate it?

incoming bandwidth is a constand 89 / 90 k/s ... however the incoming is 0 k/s.

Incomming bandwidth is a variable, the more you need the wider it will go, up to the DS restriction of your HSI plan.
Incoming should remain at 0 until you start DLing something

My apologies, I thought your sys clock was wrong, but it's geekzone's sysclock, not adjusted for daylight savings.

Yep, I've disconnected everything, having only a wireless laptop logged into the web interface watching the real-time bandwidth monitor, seems to stay the same. Even looking at the ip list there doesn't appear to be anything going out that would be causing this.

Ok, so I just managed to get onto their usage meter, and it looks like they only billed us for 40mb, not 1997mb :) ..

So I guess the router just logs all the incoming packets, even dropped ones etc..

is there really 2gb of data hitting my IP a day? Or is the router just super sensitive?

Having just browsed your user manual I'd say it's the 2Gig+ of ARP traffic on the HFC Network.

By the end of next month (all being well & going according to plan) you should see that disappear

DD-WRT is great. The last timeI used something this good was IPcop on my old Pentium.

So, first it was mid this month (glassman), then it was the end of this month (doppleganger, less than a week ago), and now it's the end of next month, assuming there are no problems? I hope either I'm misunderstanding, or you're wrong. Otherwise, I've lost complete faith in TelstraClear (as if I had much, given all the previous broken promises). This is absurd.

Actually, after having a quick peek last night, it was actually down to 10k/s ... but still about 2gb+ of ARP traffic a day.

I'll have a look again tonight to be sure. The connection is pretty solid, and after setting up the QoS, youtube videos load about 200% faster than they did with no buffering...

Haven't had to reboot the modem yet :)
