Which ADSL modem/router is best for XNET? I am planning to sign onto the broadband HSI plan and have max download/128 upload. I have a desktop pc and laptop with wifi so wondering which will be a better modem/wireless router. Dynalink RTA1025W or Linksys WAG200G? I am located 460m from the manukau city 1 exchange. Also will there be a noticeable difference in speed if i use my laptop wireless as opposed to wired?

Dynalink RTA1025W has a very good modem on board.

I have a Dlink G640T modem + 802.11b/g + 4 port router which works well for me.

I've noticed better preformance with a physical connection around 14m/s, whereas using 802.11b I get about 10m/s... Prehaps using 802.11g or the newer N would give you faster wireless.

Your download speed is reduced if your upload speed is limited, because it takes longer for acknowledge packets to be returned. Same goes for when using wireless, it takes longer for the acknowledge packets to be returned. Also note that the data rate for wireless connections is the theoretical maximum, just like broadband "full" speed and the actual speed depends on how much RF noise there is in your environment (at 2.4GHz there is a lot of noise!). I avoid wireless when I can.

And if you plan on using VFX, then it is better to have all routers after your ATA (i.e. your ATA closer to the modem so it can do a better job of QoS).

uhmm im just planning on going with their broadband HSI plan..have 1 HP laptop with vista and it has factory wireless card which picks up A, B and G. Also have 1 hp desktop with XP but no wireless capability. I will be using the internet on one computer at a time not both together. So will i be better off going with a wired modem or is it better to just get a wireless one? also can anyone recommend one because i have been reading reviews and some people like the dynalink/linksys and some people dont.

also it wont be a problem for me to move my modem around. I just want something thats reliable and will last and not have issues such as constant disconnection etc does anyone have any other modem recommendation? also will it be good for me to go on the max download/capped upload or should i save some money and go on the 256 down/128 up plan? will there be much difference?

You can expect around 3.5Mbps download with FS/128k. Being close to the exchange and assuming it is ADSL2+ enabled, you can expect (guessing) 15Mbps download with FS/FS. If you want to watch videos, then 256k/128k will be frustrating as you have to wait for the video to buffer. You decide if it is worth the extra money.

Wired is always the most reliable. Wireless never works as well as they say. But I would spend the extra $20 and get a wireless modem/router which gives you the option for the occasions when you want to use wireless.

so far iv decided to go along with dynalink..cant really decide if i should get a rta1320/rta1335..they are both pretty cheap especially the 1320 or should i chuck in some more money and just get the rta1205w with wireless (will be connected via wire though)? which one is more reliable because i do know that the 1320/1335 have heating issues but dont really mind so is it better to get a cheaper wired or is the 1205w more advanced internally?
