Hello all,

Just about to land in NZ and am wondering if on the Vodafone network if anyone has a good recommendation for a phone that handles IM (AOL, MSN, etc) pretty smoothly. I'm looking for something that's always on, as a substitute to SMS'ing overseas.

Any Blackberry, Symbian v9 or Windows mobile should handle IM programs quiet nicely. I use Agile Messenger for Symbian. Just watch the data charges

I am using an Nokia N95 with a range of IM software installed that has never troubled me....Gizmo on N95 is really cool or there is fring as well....

Do whatever you want to do man.

I use Slick for IM which seems fine to me.

Anyone got any other IM programs which they think are better? Any general agreement as to which is 'the best'?

Agile is better than Fring for messaging, I can vouch for that. Though fring does VoIP.

Plenty of good apps for the symbian phones that'll work. I have an N82 and use Fring (only for convenience as Fring incorporates Skype), and also Truphone. Truphone uses the SIP profile and has vastly better call quality than Fring/Skype et al, and you can send SMS via Truphone. I've heard good things about all the other alternatives others have mentioned here as well.
