Has anyone had any problems with their VF cable internet speed in the last few weeks? My speed at home has dropped from just under 40Mbps to <10Mbps (tested using speedtest.net) and nothing has changed at home. I'm not sure exactly when it degraded but definatively a few weeks now. I have tried powering off/on all of my network devices with no luck.

 

Just wondering if there's a general slowdown on cable?

If its only 40 Mbps at a good time, that would suggest wifi for testing? Have you tried a cabled connection to the router?

You need to provide more information in how you're testing. Also using Ethernet or WiFi? Also, always test via Ethernet.

Mine was rubbish last night after it had been 'fixed' last week. Today it was 69 mbps download and 8.5 upload. That’s with WiFi and not plugged into the router. I’m sick of talking to them.

Sorry, wasn't much info there, i know. 

 

These are the tests done -

 

     

  1. PC1 ->Gigabit Switch ->Router1 ->Modem ->Internet
  2. PC2 ->Gigabit Switch ->Router1 ->Modem ->Internet
  3. Laptop1 ->200Mbps Powerline Adapter ->500Mbps Powerline Adapter ->Gigabit Switch ->Router1 ->Modem ->Internet
  4. Mobile Phone via Wifi ->Router1 (5ghz) ->Modem ->Internet (same with 2.4ghz channel test)
  5. Mobile Phone via Wifi ->Router2 (5ghz) ->500Mbps Powerline Adapter ->500Mbps Powerline Adapter ->Gigabit Switch ->Router1 ->Modem ->Internet (same with 2.4ghz channel test)

 

 

 

I was getting 38Mbps consistently before from all tests so just assumed that was my max speed for Cable Internet which was fine as it was fast enough for me.

You may still be on the non-FibreX DOCSIS 3.0 network where the HFC 50/2 plan was quite popular (FibreX 200/Gig was launched November 2016).

 

Do you get similar results when testing against Vodafone NZ's servers?

 

Make sure you select the Vodafone New Zealand server location closest to you (Wellington/Christchurch).

If you can get fiber, actual fiber rather than a plan called fiber, do that as it's much more reliable. I moved from Vodafone cable to 2degrees fiber years ago and it was a good move - fewer customer service calls, and when I call they're helpful.

Re changing to fibre - yeah i know it's quicker but as a family we're quite happy with the Cable speed (we don't need quicker), however being sub-10 is a problem for connectivity etc.

VF Cable in Wellington, Unlimited Ultrafast HFC 200. PC Ethernet to VF Home gateway HG659.

 

Test was done in the last 10 minutes or so.

 

Used this link from further up, saw similar results between Auckland and Christchurch

Thanks I realise this but it was done on an iPad right next to the router. I don’t have an Ethernet adapter for it.

Ha ha, yea well i was happy with it before! ;-)

 

On my invoice it just says i'm paying for "Unlimited Broadband and Voice" so not sure what package i'm on.

 

Anyway, an update: Really weird behavior in that Router2 had no internet connectivity (connecting to wifi on it would not access internet) but the security camera device hard wired into it did have access (i know this as i could access my footage online). So i reset it and nothing changed. Then i thought i'd follow the connection down and reset the powerline adapters between Router2 and the switch still will no luck. I then replaced the cable on the main Switch connected powerline adapter and results are now looking better as speedtest.net now reports 44Mbps and wifi connectivity through Router2 has returned. Strangely though the vodafone speed test to the wellington server is still giving me 6Mbps.

 

When doing initial testing months/years ago i use speedtest.net so i don't know if the VF speed test result is different as i have nothing to compare to and i won't know for sure if everything looks better until my son gets up and starts gaming - no doubt he'll let me know for sure! ;-)

 

Thanks for the responses guys, initially i thought it was a general slowdown as having experience with VF i know they have their issues from time to time.

Based on everything you've said so far any issues are almost certainly either the hardware you're using or your internal network setup.

Ok, you should go back to first principles. You’ve posted you also have powerlines adaptors. That adds to what could be causing a problem.

 

so:

 

1. You need to confirm your internet is sound. That means connecting a computer as close to the cable modem as possible, using a wired connection.

 

2. I imagine you are using the hg659 as well. A hard reset is always a good idea.

 

3. In the same room, with only the cable modem, a cable to your router, and a wired connection lan1 of the router to your computer, run a few Speedtests. Ideally run the app on laptop and note through chrome or similar, as the Speedtest websites shovel tons of ads down.

 

I seem to recall Vodafone’s default cable speeds were 50/2, then they had options for 200/20 and 1000/100. If you don’t know which ones you were on, there’s some baselines to look at.

 

4. If the speeds look good, you eliminate voda as the problem and can focus on home setup, which as @sbiddle called out, is more likely the problem

 

one observation I have is the Vodafone Speedtest servers are massively overloaded and just do not report anything near what you should get. I use them on occasion and they claim I’m getting 250mbps over wifi at home. Changing to a different test server I can get 500mbps over wifi consistently.

 

Guess voda are focusing all spend on 5G!
