Hi all,

Does anyone know of any way I can locate the physical location of my telecommunications exchange?

Reason for asking is that I’m living in the Glenfield  area (Totaravale to be more precise) and my ISP line speed is averaging +- 2.8Mbps. I assume that my most of us on the North Shore all already running on ADSL2+ infrastructure and thus I assume the only reason for my piss poor line speed is due to the copper cable length between my house and the exchange. Do you agree?
BTW: I’m on the XNET Fusion plan using the recommended Linksys WAG54GP2 router

DSL Modulation Mode:            GDMT
DSL Path Mode:                     INTERLEAVED
Downstream Rate:                  2765 Kbps
Upstream Rate:                      704 Kbps
Downstream Margin:                10 db
Upstream Margin:                    13 db
Downstream Line Attenuation:   49
Upstream Line Attenuation:       31

Thanks,
Breyten

Theres the main Glenfield exchange at Mayfield Road so you could be running off that.

According to rscole's link, you are most likely off that exchange.

Thanks Gavin and rscole!

Acording to Google maps, the exchange us about 3km from my house. So might explain the slow speeds.

My exchange details according to this site is as follows:
Exchange Area: Glenfield
Projected ADSL2+ Upgrade: Jan 2008

However there is another comment that reads:
"This address is scheduled to be connected to a roadside cabinet using faster broadband equipment (ADSL2+ technology) by Oct 2011."

Don't know what that means... It looks like I'll have to wait till 2011 for quicker internet.

Thanks again for your help.

3km should give you at least 10Mbps sync to the exchange. I'm 3.5km from Pakuranga exchange. Either your modem is faulty, your wiring is faulty, you still have something plugged into a phone jack (like Sky), or the port at the exchange is faulty.

Thanks Niel,

Firstly... I think I would soil my pants if I manage to get a downstream close to yours Wink

Secondly, nothing plugged into my phone jack. Just one phone line connected to my modem

Say for instance there is something wrong with my modem, exchange or cabling. Can you just imagine trying to explain this to the customer service consultant at XNet due to the number of complaints/queries they received on this subject.

I might try giving them a call and see what they recommend I do, but I don't think I'm going to have any joy. (I'm a "glass is half empty" kind of a guy)

Again thanks for all of your feedback!

Breyten, your surname is Van Tonder, that can only be South African. "Ek is 'n Kapenaar" (for the Kiwis: I'm from Cape Town). Their technical guys are good, and if they have not yet read your post then they will read it tomorrow morning. When I joined 2 years ago I posted a comment that I ws getting frequent disconnections, the next day Cameron phoned me on my mobile and discussed the issue for about 15 minutes, turned out that the exchange was being upgraded to ADSL2+ and disconnections were to be expected.

Back to your issue, they can do a remote diagnostic of the line and also get Telecom to change your port. They are especially nice to Fusion customers, because VFX is their speciality and Fusion customer need the reliability.

Try swapping your modem with a friend's, or get a cheap one off Trade Me.

Just to make sure, you do not have a filter between the modem and the wall socket. And if someone before had wiring done ("full install"), then you must be plugged into the ADSL wall socket and not the phone sockets.

Thanks Niel... Or should I rather say "Baie Dankie!"
Yip, born and bred in Johannesburg!

I'm not using a filter anywhere and honestly didn't even know there "might" be an ADSL specific wall socket installed. I'll experiment by moving my modem around the house to different wall sockets and see if my connection speed improves.

Also, I'll borrow my brother's modem/router and see if this improves anything.

Again thanks!

I also have a simalar problem, I am 2.6km away from the exchange on 40 year old, overhead copper and I was getting 6M down and 800K up but got continuous disconnections, the increased the noise margin and I now only get 4M down and 700k up.
My exchange is ADSL2 enabled, I have tried several different routers and there is no difference.
I am on the fusion plan and being NDSL there are no filters.
I complained to Xnet and they told me there was nothing they could do as the line is working.
They changed their tune when I mentioned poor VFX quality, but low and behold everything settled down while they investigate and they cant see any problems to fix.
I still get the odd bout of being kicked off, it always seems to be out of hours and when I reboot the WAG54GP2 in the morning all is OK. I have placed a dedicated UPS on the WAG so there are now way any power fluctuations are getting through.

We are not due to go to a cabinet until 2011 so this is most frustrating, the plus side is that is will be VDSL and may be faster than ADSL depending on the location of the cabinet.

Bring on fiber to the home.

John
