My mate is currently on ADSL2 speeds (~17-20Mbps down, ~1Mbps up) thru slingshot. He lives about 5km from the centre of town (outskirts of town) and about 3km away from me.
I live about 3km from the centre of town and even thou my modem says ADSL2 the speeds are 4Mbps down and 850Kbps up.
His parents live 1.5km away from town and also have the same speeds as me and are also with Xnet.

I have looked on the telecom ADSL2 checker site (http://www.telecom.co.nz/broadband/speed/adsl2) and it says I should have ADSL2, but the speeds don't seem to show anything of what I'd execpt of ADSL2.
I cannot say if my modem is indead working at ADSL2, or if the road I live on has poor wiring.

Is anyone out there (on Xnet) getting what might be execpted from ADSL2??

NOTE: i understand ADSL2 does sweet all for international speeds as my mate and I are getting about the same international speeds

Depends where your exchange is. If over 3km away you will not get more than ADSL1 speed. Your distance can be estimated from your modem connection statistics page.

Note that ADSL2 is not faster than ADSL1, but I assume you mean ADSL2+ (note the +). ADSL2 adds the ability for the exchange and your modem to negotiate their Tx power to the minimum required to maintain a good connection, thus reducing crosstalk between subscribers and thus improving noise margin and overall speed/reliability. What ADSL2+ adds is double the number of possible communication channels (frequencies), but the higher frequencies are easily attenuated over distance and thus after 3km of cable you will not see benefit of "+".

Yeah, every mention of ADSL2 is about ADSL2+ (i'm just too lazy to press the extra key)
Understand that further the distance, increase the noise etc, lower the speed, just kinda annoying that my mate who lives an additional 2km further out, is getting better speeds.
Plus doesn't really explain why his parents, who live pretty much in town (about 1-2km away from the main Hamilton exchange), aren't getting ADSL2+ speeds, and have the same speed as I do.

I just upgraded not long ago to a ADSL2 Modem.We are in North Hamilton.
Just down the rd from us is a Large green box on the corner of the street !! Less than 100 mtrs away.
We noticed an increase in our d/l speed from around 7 Mbps to near 13Mbps.
We are with Ihug/Vodafone.
Think with us we were Cabinitised

im with telstra clear PDQ (not cable) and i download at 600-700kbs avg which is pretty fast but on router only shows 7mps down stream, telstra still not support adsl2 yet?

You mean 700kBps and 7Mbps. "B" = Bytes, "b" = bits. So 700kbps = about 5.6Mbps which is what you would expect from a 7Mbps connection minus overheads.

My sync speed is 15707/945 Kbps at the moment, but, it's been faster in the past. That's actually a fair bit slower than normal.
Using sftp, 20 connections, I regularly get speeds of 1.5MB/s international. I'm very happy with the speed.

I am currently on xnet's Flood plan and my router 'says' it is connecting at ADSL2+, but I only get 3.5Mbps, which is not too bad for ADSL 1.1. So after the Vodafone Rep blitzed the area and tried to entice me with ADSL2+ option and the magic 'Red Zone' I rang xnet and was told the following "I could only get ADSL2+ speed on the Fusion plan".
I asked if this may 'change' in the future for the flood plan (or any other plan for that matter), to which he optimistically replied 'maybe'.
we live in hope.

River is FS/128k and the 128kbps upload speed effectively limits downloading to around 3.5Mbps due to how TCP/IP works.

Flood is FS/FS and the upload speed normally does not limit the download speed. You are limited by the ADSL1 profiles, line condition, and modem failure.

Fusion is the only ADSL2+ enabled plan from XNet (if your exchange is ADSL2+ enabled).

So if you are getting 3.5Mbps on Flood then you are unlikely to get much faster speed on ADSL2+ anyway. Perhaps your account is actually on River instead of Flood.

How does a rep know what speed you will be able to get? Did he do any testing on your line?

Definitely on Flood, as I needed the upstream bandwidth a while ago and have kinda gotten used to it.
Here is the speeds I get.

Although I am only 2Kms from my exhange I would have though I might have a little more speedier connection.
Interesting my DSL Connection at my router says:

Downstream Rate: 3675 Kbps
Upstream Rate: 850 Kbps
Downstream Margin: 12 db
Upstream Margin: 12 db
Downstream Line Attenuation: 49
Upstream Line Attenuation: 30

Maybe the copper lines are shot? or I DO acutally live too far away!

That attenuation should give you about 6Mbps sync rate and correlates with about 3.5km of copper wire between you and the exchange. Try swapping your modem with a known good one. Also unplug everything including filters and Sky so you have only the modem plugged in. XNet can also do a remote diagnostic on your port in the exchange, which might be faulty.

Slightly OT, but still ties in with speeds so Mods should hopefully consider it okay (just).

To get decent speeds from ADSL2+, particularly if you are further away from an exschange you need to ensure your wiring and setup are up to spec.

First ditch those plug in filters and move to a central splitter - plugins are NOT recommended for ADSL2+ and will in most cases deliver reduced performance. If you're using plug in filters and have house cabling in series this will also probably cause reduced speeds due to reflections.

There are many factors but poor household wiring would be one of the biggest contributors to poor speeds.. exlcuding ISP's who don't have bandwidth! :-)
