Hi,

Is anyone else seeing incredibly poor throughput in Paraparaumu? I on the TCL 20GB plan and several speedtests throughout the day are giving me a max d'load of ~1.4Mbps up *and* down against Speedtest.net servers in NZ and Australia. Sometime ago I tested and had consistently 8-9Mbps download. So something is definitely amiss at least for me. Latency against non-citylink hosts are 20-40 ms range domestically, 40-50 to Australia.

Thanks Wilstar,

I just found I can get the results of my best speedtest from back in December. Basically right at the limits for my plan, and this was against a server in Sydney! Pretty good back then, but pathetic at the moment.

also in Paraparaumu and it's been ***** awful all day - when Google takes > 1min to load I didn't even bother with a Speedtest.

just assumed it was part of my ongoing weird access issue (see my posts in "Baffling Connection Problem" thread)

Hmmm... When I get home tonight I'll see if I'm getting any packet loss. I had upgraded my router to a recent DD-WRT build and thought possibly it could have been related to that. With others having problems in the area, it's probably safe to say it's not me or us.

Mines normal again this morning, about 9.8 down and 2 Mb/s up on lightspeed 40gb plan

Hmmm... mine is still pathetic. I just did a quick ping test to my gateway and am seeing values mostly in the teens, but occasionally spikes of 140+ ms. After 160 packets, average is 25ms, max was 483!

I'm going to take my router out of the loop and see if it's any better.

I assume you mean your TCL gateway? if so similar results I've been seeing, although add in multiple timeouts, whether direct wired to the modem or via my own router; main symptom I've been having (aside from obviously slow connectivity) is a near 100% failure of any download.

To be fair to TCL they have been pretty prompt in replacing both my modem & even the cable.

Interestingly my neighbour (2 doors away) is seeing no issues with their TCL cable connection !

Hmm... I thought I replied to this last night using the quick reply, and it looks like it didn't get through.

Yes, I was referring to my TCL gateway. Ping times are normal now, about 21ms on average and a lot fewer spikes above 70ms (which is quite high as it is, but I digress...). Dload is back up to 9.8 Mbps, and 2Mbp up.

Now if TCL would only increase their data caps while holding the price I would be a happy camper. I moved here from the US about a year and half ago and the low data caps for the price we pay has been a sore point for me. I'm too cheap I suppose to go up to the 40GB plan, or perhaps I can say I'm too principled to give TCL more of my money.

I think my next door neighbor was having problems awhile ago similar to yours. Next time I see them, I'll try to remember to ask about what the resolution was. I know TCL came out and did something for them.

I am in Waikanae and have not noticed any changes recently.

Speed test is around 9.2 Mbps down and 1.8 Mbps up.

I'm in node 93. Are you in the same node?

I forgot to add that the problem was in my Router it seems. Perhaps exacerbated or triggered by other local issues I don't know, or maybe it was just the firmware I'm running flaked out. A good hard reset and reconfigure and everything is back to normal.

Anyhow, how do you know what node you're in?

On the Green box outside your house it should have a number on it. Mine says W93 with a number under it. I think it is also the same for the black jointers on the poles. It will have a number on the top which I am pretty sure is the node.

The box outside my neighbor's house, which I presume is where the cable is connected, says 87A. There aren't any power poles in my neighborhood, everything is underground in this part of Paraparamu Beach.

I assume everyone on the same node 'shares' the bandwidth allocated to that node?

Hi folks
My speedtests showed things back to "normal" although some sites can still take an age to show up and I'm still getting broken downloads ! Like you jason, not used to this "data cap" thing so added frustration, if d/l's don't work then i need to repeat them (and again) thus "wasting" data allowance.
Had another replacement Motorola box and another new IP address today - still not right, but TCL are trying!

Being used to "old-fashioned" ADSL over copper, I don't know the relevance of node numbers.

I had cable modem back in the States, and just before we left they finally upped the dload speed to 8Mbp, from 2Mbp. This was in the Phoenix area, not some backwater cable company. So comparatively, my speeds are greater here than when I left the US. Latency is a whole different ball of wax though, but most times I don't really notice.

Wish I had some ideas to possibly help you out, but you seem to know what you're doing. Let me know if there is anything you think I can do to help.
