I'm currently looking at doing so.
How do current users rate Xnet? Especially with internet speeds (i.e. youtube, ftp downloading etc...)?
Cheers,
Kelburn

I changed ISP away from Xnet because of substandard peak time international performance in 2007. They might have improved since then but I have my doubts.

Xnet have recently renegotiated their international links & there is now signs of improved peak time performance.

Mine is still rather slow and so is my friend. we are both on fusion however, i'm on the torrent, he's on the 10gb a month. Usually for a 1-2 minute youtube video it takes longer than that to buffer. So i leave it.

On the other hand, it means I've been out and about doing more work round the house :) so it's making others in the household happy

Apart from the slow speeds though, they have one of the best Service Desks round :) and Maverick on the forums has always been great with helping out with issues

if you are a heavy user perhaps try SNAP ISP. peak time streaming need buffering.
pros = PPM pay as you go.

BTW unless you are on the naked DSL, you will be connected to DSL1 speed even you are on a cabinet and DSL2+ exchange. read the T/C fine print!

Good point too :) i forgot about this.

Only the Fusion plans have ADSL2+ and only if your exchange is upgraded to it

No there isn't.  It's 8.22pm - a 4min 25sec youTube video has been downloading since just after 8pm...

Fortunately I very rarely watch youTube material, but I think that's more a mindset I've developed because of Xnet's atrocious overseas connection speeds.

Couldn't agree more.

Dont, they have rubbish support, and regularly have network outages lasting several hours (like today for 3 hours)

Gidday, not sure if this relates to this post or whether to start a new one... but here goes...

Has anyone noticed a drop in their negotiated dsl router speeds today or recently? Hard to say when this has happened to me, my router used to have Downstream Connection Speed of 13,000 kbps and Upstream of 800 kbps and now has a negotiated Downstream Speed of 1961 kbps and Upstream of 326 kbps.

I've made no hardware/transmission changes other than power resetting the DSL modem (a couple of times) with the same result. I reside in the Blockhouse Bay area. I believe my closet exchange is about 150m away. My data usage is well within my cap (So presumably not account related) and I'm on the Fusion (naked dsl) connection.

Just curious to know if this is common to others.

Change in sync speed has nothing to do with XNet, only with the connection between you and the exchange. Probably a faulty modem, faulty phone, faulty filter, or you got water inside the phone wiring.

Cheers Niel/Vinnie,

Seems the SYNC issue between my DSL router and the exchange has corrected itself back to negotiated 13688 DL and 944 UL (no hardware changes or troubleshooting at my end). Guessing its one of those intermittent issues that pop up unexpectedly or a one off... and just when I was going to mega the line... (kidding!!).

Back to the original post, I have had the occasional issue with connectivity but I never really went out of my way to isolate each problem, usually things restored itself, I'm guessing 97% uptime whenever I've needed to use the DSL , at the time of selecting XNET, the plans suited me the best. Might be time to review what else is floating around.

Yeah same here, I've just switched mine over to Telecom, just because i want proper youtube/gaming performance. I've finished with my downloading sessions for now. I just want to run youtube playlists while out gardening over summer, then come in, have a beer and play some COD5 or Modern Warfare 2 online when it comes out.

It's gonna be a good summer I think :) Thanks for all the help and support Xnet looks like my ADSL has churned back on, will ring your helpdesk up tonight for final bill + confirmation that it's closed :)

Only once have I had issues with bandwidth, when I got time-outs to internet banking hosted in AU. Otherwise it's been sufficient for our non-YouTube usage. But the last week or two in the evenings even local speed has dropped significantly. Sometimes as low as 1Mbps down and 400kbps up while sync'ed at 10Mbps up and FS down (Fusion). Off-peak I get 8Mbps+. (Using XNet's speed test.)

Perhaps the exchange is congested (Pakuranga, Auckland), perhaps XNet is congested. Either way, hope this improves. Are others also experiencing this with national bandwidth?

My own performance and reliability experience with Xnet has been less than ideal and i'm in the process of moving away from them. YMMV but they're not high on my list at present.
