Have moved to Wellington and am told there are hotspots within the area.Do most mobile phones have wi-fi connections? can anyone explain in depth the meaning of wi-fi?

Wi-Fi is a wireless LAN present in most newer laptops. It is also becoming common in PDAs (Pocket PC and Palm), and currently only a handful of mobile phones have Wi-Fi (the i-mate SP5 for example).

You can have Wi-Fi at home, for example. You can also find public hotspots. These are mostly a paid service, although some places offer free access, while some users don't bother implementing security so sometimes you can also find free access from private users (sometimes they don't even know their wireless LAN can be used by other people).

The most common Wi-Fi Hotspot providers here in Wellington are Cafenet and Telecom New Zealand.

It is always pleasure having you reply with such knowledge to topics. I understand you are a fellow Wellingtonian as well. We have a store down here just opened.
From what i can gather Wi-Fi (Wireless Fidelity) for mobile phones are only if the handset is HTML browser capable. We have two phones in stock capable the Nokia 9300 and the Nokia 7710. Do they have WI-FI capability?? I do know they are capable of loogging on through GPRS, but if they are WI-FI capable can they log on for free??
I do know you have the Jasjar which will arrive in our store very shortly?? am looking forward to that as well

If you are a Xtra Jetstream customer, you have free access to the TCNZ wifi portals round town, otherwise it will cost you $9.95 for one hours access (if you are a Broadband customer, the data used during the wifi sessions is counted on your monthly allowance)

Neither the 9300 or 7710 are WiFi :)
