Hi,

Over the last few weeks, I've noticed that whilst the phone call is connecting and during the connected call itself, there are infrequent but loud blasts of static or interference.

I have line filters installed and I've tried swapping out the phone's batteries, swapped ports, reset the router and changed cables into the router / phone socket.

I'm not sure if this a hardware issue or if there is an issue with the Xnet service itself....I was wondering if there were any other people out there encountering similar problems?

If not - any thoughts as to suggested fixes?

What sort of phone are you using? Does it happen on a corded phone?

Either your WAG54GP2 is failing (unlikely), your phone is failing (likely), or something is interfering with RF of your phone (and will with a similar phone).

If the WAG is failing, I've heard of XNet sometimes sending out a loan unit for a customer in trouble. But first try everything else. First try a corded phone instead of cordless, because that rules out many variables.

Checking filters will be a waste of time (unless you have very poor internet, like dial-up speed).

You can never have enough Volvos!

Turn your Wireless off on the router and see if the "noise" goes away.. If it does then turn wireless back on and change the channel its on on the wireless router or phone if possible.

I've seen many instances of wireless Phones interfering/being interfered with with wireless routers.

Thanks for the fast responses!

The phone is a cheap cordless Panasonic from Dick Smith, although it's been working interference free up until a few weeks ago.

Other WiFi devices that are in the flat are some remote rear speakers for the home cinema set, a PS3 (which is off at the time of testing) and a couple of laptops.

I will certainly try the corded phone idea - it puzzles me why it would suddenly start picking up the static. Would changing channels on the router help, I wonder.

Update - just reread the previous post, and obviously it would.

Failure of the WAG is a scary thought - although a new N router would be nice.

Cheap cordless panasonic could mean either a $40 dect phone which IME are OK but the range is crap, or some analog piece of crap that I have no idea why they still make when digital is only $40...

If you have a 2.4GHz phone, it will not get on with wifi - one will suffer. Believe it or not there are still 2.4GHz analog phones available which are the worst for being messed up and messing up wifi..

Check the model of your cordless to see if its a digital and what freq its on.

Nope not an issue with the service, possibly more likely the unit itself, we have seen this happen occassionaly with this hardware but it is also possible as others have mentioned interference from another source, cheaper phones sometimes don't have the best filters and cheaper components which makes them more susceptabile to interference, (thats why there cheap

)

Phone into the Help desk and tell them your issue with the WAG54gp2......We will see what we can do

All DECT phones have good quality RF modules, because the modules need to be certified and so there are only a few manufacturers of those modules. Panasonic DECT phones are good quality but their styling is very dated.

But be aware WDECT is not DECT and there is no certification for WDECT (only normal EMC/EMI testing which does not guarantee performance).

Components wear out. Could be the phone, could be the WAG, could be the neighbour got Sky for xmas and added a wireless "extender" which is rubbish and is interfering with your phone. There are many possibilities. Could be your microwave oven is getting old and leaking.

Panasonics cheap phones have crap range. I guess they just dial the power back or use a crap antenna to make them have a lower value than the more expensive ones.
