Hi everyone,

I've just moved to NZ and am thinking of getting either whoosh or vodafone 3g as my broadband connection.

I am correct in thinking that whoosh and vodafone 3g are similar technology? How do they compare in terms of cost and speed?

I don't need a data card as I have a htc universal (i-mate jasjar equivalent) which I can use as the 3G modem.

We have a pre-pay vodafone as well - is it worth signing up to vodafone 3G or should I just get the whoosh card for my laptop and use the nokia pre-pay for phone?

Woosh and Vodafone both use UMTS, but of a different kind. You will see that while Woosh offers a wireless broadband, it has selected coverage areas, whilst Vodafone is more of a mobile approach.

The Vodafone solution is good for mobile workers, but due to cost I wouldn't have it for everyday use. In this case if you can't have a fixed line broadband (such as ADSL or cable modem), then Woosh would be a better option (if you are in a covered area). Woosh prices are very good if you are in their area.

Woosh also offers a phone service, based on VoIP. It's not a cellular service though, and it relies on connecting to your Woosh modem, so it's more like a fixed VoIP over wireless broadband.

Personally, I have Internet access through both Woosh and Vodafone. There is an enormous difference in cost between the two, so it's desirable to use Woosh when you're within their coverage area. When I'm outside of Woosh's coverage area, I use Vodafone as a backup.

I dont know if anyone has tried it yet..Say u've subscribed to Whoosh,u enter ur Whoosh APN,username and password into ur phones GPRS settings,would it work.

If it did,would be great,u can use it instead of vodafone GPRS.

No, it won't work. Different networks, authentication, etc.

Thanks for the replies. I've been reading a bit more about both services today.

I'm using a friend's woosh while I'm in hotels but when we get somewhere to rent I think I'll just go for an adsl line.

I can't use woosh on the universal so I think I'll also be getting one of the cheaper vodafone 3g plans - I need it for the phone anyway and it will be handy to use the universal when I'm travelling.

BTW - shouldn't woosh have an 'h' in it? ;)

Wow. O.k. I agree that everybody can not be a tech genius, but! Think first.

This reminds me that comment I read on a forum where a new owner of a Nikon D50 SLR digital camera wrote the followings:
"Ok I just Bought the Nikon D50 so far so good I really like it, A couple of things that I wasent aware of ( even after been studing for over 4 days ) was that It does not take movie clips, so if you are looking for movie clips on your digital camera The nikon D50 is not gonna match your needs. Another thing that I am not to happy about is that, to take a Pic you have to look through the Viewfinder you can not look at the Monitor.. Nikon should have made that as an Option .."

The problem with ADSL is that, on top of your ISP charges, you have to pay ~$40 per month to Telecom for a copper phone line. Most ISPs are not very upfront about this, in my opinion.

This isn't a problem if you need a landline phone anyway but, if not, then it's a wasteful cost which makes Woosh look much more appealing from an economic point of view.

I've just moved into a rented flat and I'm still using my friends Woosh but am finding it a bit slow.

I'm trying to investigate a faster connection ADSL or cable - anyone have any suggestions?

I'm also looking to buy a desktop PC. We went to Noel Leeming but they didn't seem that cheap. Any good cheap online retailers worth looking at?

noel leeming is not the place for PC :-D harvey norman is alright but still not the cheapest.

best build yourself, or from dell's website or from warehouse (Dell)...
