Hi,

I have an iPhone running over vodafones 3G network. I have also recently signed up to Telstra Clear. The good news is that I can receive emails from my clear.net address on my iPhone, the bad news is that every time I try to send an email I get a error message that says "The Server rejected one of the recipients addresses. The message has been placed in your Outbox", unless the recipient is a clear.net address, in which case it goes through.

I contacted telstra-clear and got the following response:

Hello Damon,

Contact your phone provider and have them provide SMTP settings. By default, an SMTP server is set to only accept messages from it's own network. If your iPhone connects via Vodafone, you're most likely to need to switch to smtp2.vodafone.net.nz (or whatever their server is called.

If the query is regarding an urgent fault issue please contact us on 0508 888 800 for Residential customers, 0508 555 500 for Business customers. At the voice prompts please ask for "technical assistance".

Kind regards,

TelstraClear Customer Care

Despite thinking that they are actually wrong (why would emails sent from a clear.net address go through another ISP's server?, and why does the clear.net addresses go through???), I tried changing to the vodafone smtp that I used to use when I have a vodafone account, and surprise surprise, no joy.

Bottomline - Does anyone here have a clear.net account that they are using succesfully to send emails from their iPhone, and if so, what settings are you using??

Cheers!

I'm sure at some point, someone will suggest or advice you it is best to get your own domain, or use Gmail/Google Apps and redirect all your mails from TCL to that...

Having your own domain for email means you're less depending on your ISP, especially if you do switch to another ISP etc.

I'm not sure what you have done incorrectly, Vodafone's SMTP server does work and should be working in this case.

I've used smtp.vodafone.net.nz in the past

I used to use Vodafone's smtp server on my phone but when I switched to the N1 since I would be popping in and out of wifi all the time, I would also get authentication errors. So I now use my own domain's SMTP server which works all the time.

It's worth noting the smtp.vodafone.net.nz will only work while connected to Vodafone.

Exactly why I switched since my N1 is on 3G and wifi about equally, with work wifi, home wifi and Cafenet when I am in range and then 3G otherwise.

You need to subscribe to Telstraclears mail+ service, that will allow you to use their SMTP service from other providers networks.

If you don't feel like paying $4.95 per month for the privilege, then you may need to consider one of the below:
* Keep using 3G only when trying to send emails using vodafones SMTP servers. (can be expensive, depending on usage)
* Send mail over your telstraclear broadband/dial up connection using wifi (annoying if you are wanting to send your mail on the move)
* Use gmail or another service that allows you to use SMTP from any network. (though keep in mind that some of these will insert 'on behalf of abc@gmail/com')
* Use a different mail provider (if you have a domain - lots of providers out there, and very easy to move).

Its worth noting that there are a mix of ISP's that do and don't provide 'remote access' for their mail services (Xtra used to require a subscription called secure remote email, but now provide remote access free of charge). Always worth checking before signing up.

As an anti spam measure providers smtp servers are typically locked down to only accept sent mail from devices connected to the providers network.

Another anti spam measure is that many providers block you sending on port 25 using external mail servers.

Telstraclear should allow you to connect to their smtp server via smtp auth, ssl or tls on a port other than 25 and send mail. $4.95 a month for that service is a rip off imo.

TBH I would register my own domain ($20 a year) and use google apps for domain standard (free) or Microsoft similar thing (forget what it's called).

Decoupling your email form your provider gives you tons more flexibility.

If you want to save money and not get your own domain, you can use gmail. It has a smtp server available

smtp.gmail.com (use authentication)
Use Authentication: Yes
Port for TLS/STARTTLS: 587
Port for SSL: 465

And it doesn't use port 25 so you can get around silly things like the Koru Lounge's ISP (perhaps Xtra) blocking port 25 on their wifi so it made sending mail quite hard unless you were using Outlook Web Access (for Exchange) or a VPN.

Hey not sure if you have this issue sorted or not.

I am currently running a iPhone 3G on XT, previously Vodafone.

I can confirm that I did not have to use any special SMTP servers or anything to get my email to send/receive for Clearnet.

Incoming Settings:
USE SSL:Off
AUTHENTICATION: Password
DELETE FROM SERVER: Never
SERVER PORT: 110

Example

I have an Iphone with Vodafone and phones/emails from Telstra. I also have a company domain name and email for my business which is hosted in USA. I cannot send emails from my IPHONE  via telstra BUT I can send emails via gmail accountWink

SMTP   smtp@gmail.com
user name is youremail@gmail.com
password .........................

USE SSL must be ON
Server Port must be 587

That will work and you can tell Telstra that xtra do this at no charge and they can jam there $4-50 per month up the proverbial
I was on hold for 20 mins at Telstra looking for help with this and hung up without speaking to anybody so tried the above and it works fine.
