I have a second generation iPhone (Iphone 3g) that is not locked (assuming so because I have used my Iphone on 2 degrees and it is fine and also I can manually adjust APN settings) purchased in New Zealand from Vodafone. Actually got it from a friend second hand and she didn't have it on any data plans.

I would like to disable all cellular data  so that wifi is the only possible internet to avoid large bills - I am currently on vodafone prepaid.

I looked up methods to do so online, and ended up installing the unlockit.co.nz app which put a fake apn in. However, I have noticed that my prepaid balance was decreasing for no reason so I checked under usage and there was data  being sent and received even though I had a fake apn.

I have checked the settings of my iphone under setting - networks - enable 3G is Off, data roaming is off, internet tehtering is off, vpn is not configured. Under cellular data network apn is fakeapn.notvalid, username ias asdfgha4534dd.notvalid and password is asdasd.

This means that my iphone is using data with a fake apn and I'm being charged for it!

Anyone know how I can completely switch off cellular data?

HELP APPRECIATED!!

IIRC, it dosent matter what APN you enter into the phone on the Vodafone network, it still connects.

Im sure John or Paul can confirm.

Or other option is to upgrade the iOS and it gives you a nice "Celluar Data Off" option.

Id say mentalinc is referring to the fact that a standard user has to contact their phone provider to turn off a basic feature such as data connectivity.

I know there are various reasons as to why/why not, but wont get into it as I dont know enough about cell data and will probably put someone wrong :)

I'm sure I've done the same through the helpdesk, and from memory, it was pretty quick and painless to setup.

Well you said it yourself, upgrade and use the in-built functionality to turn off cellular data.  don't upgrade and your only option is to have the service disabled.  it's not like it's the norm for someone to have to contact their provider to turn features on and off, a user has to stay up to date or they lose out on features to make life easier.  it's nice to have the option of having the service turned off at the source though.

I think Vodafone design their network so you CAN do things... I would say it's not really in VF's or most users best interest to disable parts of it. At least there is a work around.

I thought if you changed the apn to black and white's one, the data was disabled, unless it's changed?

Plug into ITunes.. upgrade to V4.1 and you will have an option in Settings,General. Network called Cellular Data (on/off).

Buy if you

If you are using V3 or below put

As you have my "fakeAPN' Settings.. (www.unlockit.co.nz)

The blocking apn is www.m2.net.nz

exactly that, no spaces or anything else in front or behind or it will charge data.

edit: forgot to mention that if you turn off cellular data as suggested above, you won't be able to send or receive text messages.
