Hey.
I recently joined Telstra clear broadband but am getting very frustrated with the usage meter that they have, for an ISP where you really have to keep an eye on it due to extra data caps being auto added once you reach your first data limit. So to have it update very erratically sometimes taking 36 hours to update it makes it difficult.

Are there many customers out there that have the same issues/feelings towards this?

Telstra's usage meter isn't exactly the best in the business. It's often many hours behind or unreachable. For me it always seems to go down for a day or two at the end of the billing month.

Your best bet is to use a network monitor like networx (http://www.softperfect.com/products/networx/) but it only works if you have one computer. Also give TUC a try (http://www.tuc.co.nz/). It's made by a kiwi for NZ ISPs. It does get data from Telstra's usage meter so it's only as accurate as that but it gives you a whole bunch of other data like how much you can use each day which helps you manage you cap better.

If your computer is a Mac and it never gets turned off, the built-in Activity Monitor does the trick. If you do reboot it every now and then, I recommend a free app called SurplusMeter.

TCL's usage meter is comprable with the worst I've used.

It can have benefits though.. once or twice a month, it randomly wont record any usage.. or I'll use say 500mb in a day and it records only 75mb and this happens without it adding the missing usage onto the following day.

The problem is its very unpredictable.

I made a thread on this subject a while ago. Basically, yeah, it's terrible and there's not much you can do about it.

Yeah very annoying. I tried to change my data pack online to 25GB from 10GB for the next billing period, The next day I rang up the helpline to see if it had gone through who said they never got the online change. This frustrated me as this means I have to pay for a data pack I never wanted. I asked him to change it and to see if they would just move the cap I used on the new pack, but unsurprisingly they wouldn't, now 48 hour later I'm still on the same data pack and can see myself paying for another 10B pack since it most likely wont register :S
