Hey guys/gals, I've recently been bouncing from ISP to ISP looking for the right one. I went from telecom (fast but not enough bandwidth for me) to slingshot. The speedtest on slingshot was about 3.5Mb/s but we all know how slow slingshot is on All you can eat therefore I decided to change to telstra clear. I just got connected a few hours ago and I'm still using the telecom modem (thomson, cus telstra's one have not arrived yet) and I can connect to the net and stuff. Feeling relieved that I can stream youtube again (slingshot can't) I decided to give a speed test again but received pretty bad results.

The thing is, I have my home all setup cus I had been receiving good speeds from telecom so I'm wondering is it the telecom modem acting up or is there some set-in time for the telstra connection? Any tips will help and I'll try to provide any info I can give, but I might need advice on how to obtain those info.

Speedtest results aren't always that meaningful. For example the Auckland speedtest server is hosted by Xnet (I think) so all you are testing is the route from you via Telstraclear to Xnet.

There are many reasons why performance of that particular route might vary.

When you look at "performance" you are better off looking at things you care about, eg: Youtube, facebook, windows updates, steam, download from site xyz etc etc.

Also are you dealing directly via LAN? My TC speed test was always 25% slower over Wifi

Yes I am on Lan but the speed has improved drastically overnight, so I guess there was some kind of set-in period, thanks to all that have replied but the issue is resolved :D

This is ADSL 1 Btw

I get this on Slingshot AYCE.

Except atm, peak times are terrible.

The problem could be the connection between your house and the exchange, the old copper wiring. TC can't do much about that.

Try speed test on multiple servers. The older Auckland server always gave me the best results, there are two now. The Wellington server's much slower than the Auckland server, even though i'm in Wellington, which has to be to do with inefficient routing.

Well thanks for everyone's replies but I thought too early about the problem. I kinda understand what you are talking about with the bad wiring. Currently I'm living in somewhere around Flat Bush in Manukau city and maybe it is possible to have that problem, but the my net speed was rather fast before I changed ISP (when I was still at telecom I can get around 800kb/s downloads from Microsoft without DLManagers).

The main problem I'm having now is that I'm getting insanely slow speeds during "peak times" and thats pretty much the whole day except the period between 1am - 9am which just isn't useful.

Right now I'm performing a speed test at 9pm on a Wednesday night and here is the sad result:

I've followed up with telstraclear recently (hence the lack of posts) and they'd suggested to me to perform some tests on the line during different times:

3 are being used, 1 for ADSL and 2 for homeline, all are filtered, I even tried to unfilter the ADSL line (keeping the homephones filtered)

They had then since contacted me again about how telecom lines have allocated bandwidth between each ISP and congestion can occur during peak times for those ISPs that have too many customers in said area and theres nothing they can do about it.

Well now the question is, would congestion really slow it down by this much?   And if so should I just change back to telecom? Since it seems like they had more "allocated bandwidth" for this area.

Does sound like a peak time congestion issue.

First though can you login to the admin ui of you modem and take a screenshot or post the detail of the the connection stats?

eg: Line rate, line attenuation, signal to noise ratio etc

I've just switched from Clearnet on Cable to ADSL due to a house move into a non-Cabled area. Am also experiencing massive peak-time slowdown - typically to less than 1 mbps regardless of which NZ server I speedtest off (tried them all).

After midnight, it shoots up to 15 mbps - which is the speed of my ADSL2+ line.

I'd say it's deliberate throttling and all the questions about "how many other devices are plugged in" and "do you have a monitored alarm/sky deocder" etc are just the standard fob-offs.
