Switched to Vodafone's Red network a couple of weeks ago after hearing my neighbor received much faster speeds compared to my Telecom totalhome 40GB broadband package. I'm supposed to have max up and down on Telecom ADSL2+, but it turned out that Vodafone can do much better speeds on the same line.

I'm connected to the Exchange in Birkenhead and am glad i made the switch. From around 6 MB/s i'm now on 11,5 MB/s on Vodafone naked DSL. Nothing changed in my setup, using the same modem and wiring didn't change. I'm surprised and a little disappointed about the gear or setup Telecom is using in that exchange.

Similar for me but going from Telecom to Orcon - 9.5Mb with Telecom up to 14.5Mb with Orcon (Auckland speedtest).

Connected to the Takapuna exchange, also no change in wiring or modem.

Telecom wholesale use a conservative noise margin of 12dB, Orcon on LLU use 6dB. Noise margin is the buffer between what range of frequency is used vs what's physically available, it allows for stability from things like interference.

The 6dB difference normally accounts for 800kbit to 2400kbit of line rate.

I'm surprised you guys are seeing such big increases, I'm sure part is the noise margin the other part is probably the physical movement on the line in the exchange to new equipment which results in re-terminating the line on Orcon's gear.. that probably accounts for the rest of the different old gear vs new and fresh connection/termination to the gear vs old possibly worn/corroded connection/termination.

If you've seen that much of a difference simply from the noise margin it'd be interesting to see what you'd get with a proper master filter to eliminate the wiring issues.

In my case the modem is directly connected to a jack that is about two metres away from the demarcation point and was installed in 2009.

My modem is also directly connected to the only jack on the incoming line. No filter attached, got less disconnects by not using it. Noise margin is indeed around 6dB and in comparison to Telecom experienced a more drops, but seems good now over the last couple of days. Will be watching how it holds up.

Noticed similar differences between Telecom and my Vodafone connection. Also noticed the same when I was with orcon for awhile.

Was going to mention the noise margin but was beaten to it ;)

Haven't had any dropouts and connection is very stable :)

Had interleaving turned off and gaming has been great.
