I have just changed over a friend's system from VFX Naked DSL Fusion POTS analogue line off a Linksys WAG310G to VFX Asterisk service but am receiving long delays of up to 15 seconds randomly between when the dialled number is sent and the called number rings. This has happened calling XT mobiles, 0800 numbers including the XNET Help Desk, voicemail (082210) and normal local landlines including VFX landlines. I have installed a new Siemens Gigaset A580IP Duo with the same settings as my own Gigaset (except for Username and Password). My own system has been running extremely well for over a year now.

XNET help desk checked on a couple of my calls and advised there was no delay at their end between when Asterisk received the call and actioned the dialled number. My friend said that prior to installing the Gigaset she often experienced long delays, especially when calling mobile phones. Does anyone have any ideas on this? What's causing the delay? Could there be a problem at our local exchange?

The issue will be your interdigit time out and dial plans, Interdigit timeout is the setting which controls how long to wait before sending the SIP invite, this will be a setting on the phone config, also the dial plan sets the digit length for dialed numbers and can be set to match certain number ranges so the call is sent straight away as soon as those number conditions are met.

eg National numbers , 03xxxxxxx|04xxxxxxx|07xxxxxxx| etc VFX Voice mail and 0800's |082210|0800xxxxxx| , these are just examples and may not be relevant of how they need to be entered in the Siemens, it will take a bit of research and work to get it fully correct, I would suggest you go through the devices documentation and admin guide as a start.

You need to look at your asterisk logs or a live debug to see what is happening. You'll see when the call is passed to VFX in this.

Normally the issue is dialplans as the IP phone or ATA won't pass the number to Asterisk until it's reached a interdigit timeout as Maverick has explained, but the IP580 has no dialplan capabilities so the issue is looking like it's somewhere within your Asterisk setup.

Thanks Maverick and Steve. I think the problem may have been solved. On the advice of Simon from WXC I set up a static IP address in my Gigaset A580 configuration and put this in the DMZ of my WAG310G router. Also set up QOS in the WAG310G specifically for the MAC address of my Gigaset. On most calls now there is no delay. Perhaps the WAG310G is a bit of a lemon as I had no problems on my other site with a WAG160N.

One month on and still having a few issues with intermittent outgoing call delays. I swapped out the WAG310G and replaced this with a US Robotics 9108 ADSL router. SIP ALG has been set off. QOS has been enabled for the Gigaset's IP address. DMZ has been opened up for the Gigaset's IP address for UDP ports 35384:37384.

Before opening up DMZ incoming calls were often diverted as "unreachable". All incoming calls are now connecting correctly. When I restart the 9108 and the Gigaset, outgoing calls connect virtually instantly. However after a time there is 3-5 ring delay before the outgoing call connects. I checked with WxC help desk. The only thing the tech could see was that the Gigaset was registering to port 5285. I don't understand how this is happening.

Maverick, the only option to configure the dial plan is to automatically add a local prefix to local calls, i.e. if calling a local number 544xxxx the gigaset can add 03 in front.

Any ideas?
