OK - so I've had this looked at a couple of times via Xnet (and through them, Telecom have come out and checked the line), but for some reason it still seems to be playing up.

At the end of June I had good solid 10m down, and about 800k up. This speed was maintained via reboots of the router etc.

In the last month however my speed has dropped markedly down to todays stellar rating of around 2m down, 300k up.

The only problem is that *sometimes* it will perform just fine - like the last time Telecom came around to have a look... Poor guy left a SpeedTest.net result on my wifes laptop showing 9M down and around 800k up.
I reran the same test when i got home (a few hours later) down to 2.4M down....

I've also tried swapping the router with a different one I had lying around and got the same result.

Is there anything odd that it could be on my side? I read a post about dodgy wiring, but I'm not keen (nor qualified!) to go poking around out there ;)

As an example, here is the log from router (Dick Smiths XH9949) where I went from 10M to 2M in a few minutes *sniff*:

Are you able to post modem stats?

Also did you have any heavy rain at the same time things started to slow down? New computers in the house? New phone or fax? New filters or filters removed?

Hi, as Mauricio says please post the line stats, particularly the noise figure, but attenuation and sync, you will you may have to post 2 or 3 sets for the various sync rates that the modem seems to be stepping down through.

And yes what internal house wiring setup is there, a master filter or several inline filters, and if so are all pots devices filtered and how many filters.

Richomuffin:

I've also tried swapping the router with a different one I had lying around and got the same result.

So it's intermittently losing the DSL connection and when it reconnects it's at much lower rate, seems to point to something physical in the wiring.

Q1: How many phone jacks are there in the house and what's plugged into them?
Q2: Does your house have an alarm and is it wired to the phone wiring in any way?
Q3: Have you tried an "isolation test"?

Isolation Test: Basically unplug everything that's in phone jacks apart from the modem and see whether you keep getting these disconnections and reconnection's at lower rates.

Only VOIP at home - Telecom disconnected the analog lines from the jackpoint on their first visit a couple of weeks ago.
In terms of connections, removed the old filter I had on the line after Telecom removed the analog lines.
Only DSL router plugged into the jackpoint. All other jacks disconnected.

Screeny of the DSL stats here.

In terms of changes to the environment when issues started occuring, no. I was overseas for 2 weeks and when I came back it was performing badly.
No-one else in the house would have moved devices around or anything like that, and I wasn't around to fiddle ;)

Your attenuation is the cause of the problem - it's so high it will be causing poor connection speeds.

Have you been recently cabinetised at all? You can tell from the maps on the Telecom Wholesale site. It's possible you're in the process of being migrated from the exchange to a cabinet.

Your stats are similar to my stable connection which max out at about 10Mbps sync rate due to > 3.5km to exchange, except that your upstream attenuation is much higher than my 16dB. I suspect an issue with the port at the exchange/cabinet. Telecom (via XNet) can reset the port and also change to a different one. Or as was said perhaps Telecom is upgrading your exchange and you can experience such things for a few weeks.

You can never have enough Volvos!

I've just checked the Telecom Wholesale site and it appears that I'm in a VDSL2 area where the Exchange was upgraded in July... Perhaps that's it?
Service Area: WTB/Exchange
Status: Completed Jul 2011

Is the speed likely to improve with time (once they finish tinkering), or do I need to swap modems to something slightly more recent?

34dB is not that high only 2.5km, before shifting back to the city when I was in Waikanae I was approx 3.5km from the exchange and had 43dB attenuation (pretty much dead on the theoretical) and the connection was totally stable and consistent at around 6Mb/s sync.

I suggest you try connect you modem as close to the demarc or as directly as possible without any other house wiring and see what results, if it still proves unstable (as shown) then you can push it back to Chorus to sort, otherwise you might realise you have some internal house wiring to sort.

Cyril

Edit if your new local cabinet is in the process of being brought online then until its in full service your connection speed can be all over the place. The thing you will notice when you finally are on the cabinet proper is that your line attenuation will drop significantly, but for a small period post that there still may be lower than expected speeds till the cabinet it fully migrated.

Not really impressed with my new $70/month connection.
